Young Maleficent Movie Costume
Dress Like a Young Maleficent Fairy (Isobelle Molloy)
In Disney's Maleficent we first meet the fairy as a young girl, played by Isobelle Molloy. Her forest fairy costume complete with large feathered fairy wings, kudo/antelope-like horns and cute bead jewelry is one that younger girls and even tweens may want this year for Halloween.
Young Maleficent costumes were not among the ones released for the movie. They are only marketing for adult version and Aurora.
Seeing an obvious need for this cute costume, I figured out how to put together a young fairy costume in case one of my younger Maleficent fans decides on this version. I think this version will be a fun costume for younger fans of the Maleficent movie, who prefer the impishness and joyful exuberance of this wood elf to the brooding, moody adult dark fairy.
Read on to see how to make your own version of this fairy/imp/elf-inspired costume.

Meet Young Maleficent
We first meet young Maleficent, played by Isobelle Molloy, who as the largest fairy (with the largest feather wings) is charged with caring for the many little CGI created creatures in the land of the Moors.
This young, innocent and a bit impish Maleficent joyfully flies around the Moors greeting all of the inhabitants, surveying what eventually becomes her kingdom.
It is the young Maleficent who meets the young Stefan, a human farm boy from the other kingdom that has slipped into the Moors trying to steal their crystal treasures.
These two from different worlds (Stefan's, the world of the humans, a world that is vain and greedy and Maleficent's Moors, a world that needs neither king nor queen, since all of the inhabitants trust one another) become unlikely friends.
Their relationship ultimately determines the course (and the curse) of the movie.

The younger, girl version of the costume looks part fairy, part elf and part animal. She looks quite a bit like a brown fairy, except for the feather wings. She looks like an elf with her ears and a bit like an animal (kudu, antelope or ram) with the horns growing out of her head.
Her costume is one that can be put together with a basic brown tunic, a set of feathered wings, horns and bead necklace and bracelet and adding in a cute leather pouch.
This costume may be made from clothes that you might have around. An old brown shirt could be fashioned into a tunic and use ballet slippers or flats for shoes.
Younger fans of the Maleficent movie, who want to dress up as the wood elf instead of the brooding, moody adult dark fairy (or the ever cheerful Aurora) will enjoy this alternative kid and tween version.

Young Maleficent's Nails
The nails created for Maleficent create the fairy/elf effect with nude colored almond shaped artificial nails. To get the pointed, enlarged nail effect the nails probably need to be done with artificial ones.
Young Maleficent's Nails look very much like older Maleficent's nails, except these do not have the red underside (under mani). Get some nude colored nail polish, some artificial nails and a nail file and follow the video directions below to create young Maleficent's fairy nails.
Use the nude color for the underside of the nails to enhance the fairy/elf look.

Making a Young Maleficent Dress
The dress worn by this young fairy looks like a garment that someone living in the woods would wear. The fabric is a brown/olive (bark and moss) green. It looks like a polyester, chiffon, silk or silk fabric, one that can tear and fray without falling apart. A crinkled or crushed taffeta would create some of the decorative interest in the fabric, if you can't find a mossy-brown fabric to work. Alternative you can get one of the colors (brown or green) and dye the fabric in spots to get the effect or go with a nature camouflage cotton.
The dress pattern is a simple empire waistline, with three different panels in the front and short cap sleeves. The dress is made with frayed edges for the sleeve and dress in place of the normal hems. There is also a frayed embellishment at the neckline (1 1/2 inch strip of fabric frayed on either edge and stitched into place).
I still haven't found a three panel pieced bottom dress, but some of the patterns that could help in recreating the empire waist line. The best one I've found so far is Butterick B3714 version B which has the bodice and the dress and an old one McCall's 9534.
Adult patterns that could be used include McCall's Patterns M6031 (version C needs less sleeves) Kwik Sew K3611 (needs more sleeves).

Brown Dress and Patterns on Amazon
In looking for a way to recreate the young fairy's costume any brown or olive tunic (or even an old dyed t-shirt) can be turned into her dress.
This short, small sleeveless tank dress would work for a tween.
This Butterick pattern is the best one that I've found that has the empire waist line.
Version B would work well, with just a bit of a cap sleeve.
The crinkled taffeta helps to create the effect of her dress. It can be torn to get the uneven edges for the sleeve and dress hem, along with the decorative embellishments at the neckline.
You may want to add some brown dye to get it closer to the color.
This fabric comes in several other shades of brown and also olive, if you want to emphasize the green colors.
Feather Wings on Amazon
Adult sized feather wings will work well for tweens, since the wings on Maleficent are quite large.
Create a Wooden Bead Necklace
I am surprised that the movie marketing team didn't develop a jewelry and purse line for younger fans.
Maybe a line of purses and leather-beaded jewelry will be coming for tweens and young girls based on the popularity of the film.
In the meantime, it is pretty easy to make one yourself using yellow wooden beads and brown cording of your choice (leather, faux leather, cotton or wax cord or hemp).
Just string yellow beads onto a leather or suede cord, attach a few random clumps of yellow beads. If the necklace is long enough you can just tie it in a knot and pull it over the head, or tie it on when it is ready to be worn.
Another way to finish the necklace is to make a simple bead (one end) and leather or suede loop closure, since a fairy wouldn't have access to any fancy jewelry closures.

These wooden beads have a large enough hole for a leather cord and are ~ 1/2 of an inch in size.

This faux leather cord comes in different shades of brown (darker and lighter).
Use it to string the yellow beads for a fairy necklace.
10 feet = 3.33 yards
In addition to her wooden bead necklace, young Maleficent wears a matching yellow wooden bead bracelet, with several beads on the left and a bead closure on the right.
Like the bead necklace, the bead bracelet is simple to make. Just string several (3 or so) yellow beads on a suede or faux leather cord.
Since fairies don't have access to fancy jewelry closures, you can create a bead closure (which it looks like in the photograph).
Use a bead on one end and fashion a leather or suede loop closure on the other. To wear just pass the bead through the loop.

Maleficent's Treasure Bag Pouch
The other touch of color on Young Maleficent's dress is provided by her small pouch bag is attached to her dress by a brown string.
The leather pouch has a flap closure which is embellished with turquoise suede string and dark and light brown beads. There look to be a few feathers attached at the bottom of the strings.
The cognac drawstring pouch would work to attach to a costume, though it looks more like Stefan's (but lighter).
To make your own, use the Period Patterns bags, purses and pouches. Patterns v, xvii or xxxvi look like they would work well. I also found a 40's Vintage Sewing pattern #4990, which has a Belt Purse Bag (version 3 A or B) that could be turned into Maleficent's trinket bag.

As far as existing costumes go, these forest and woodland fairy costumes are some of the better pre-made ones available.
