"Roary The Hungry Lion"

I pride myself on writing children short stories, and this is one from my collection. I hope you enjoy it as much as my grand children. This is a story about a baby lion named Roary that was left behind in the jungle all alone. Roary was left behind when a hunting safari took his parent to the zoo. Roary had to take care of himself now. While growing up in the jungle he met friends to play with. Roary met a monkey name bonzi, a hippo name Hedda, an elephant name Farley and a rhinoceros name Reno. They played together in the jungle nearly every day. Hedda asked Roary how did you get the name Roary? Roary said I got the name Roary because I was born with a ferocious roar. Hedda asked Roary can you roar for us? Sure Roary replied, get ready here it comes Roarrrrrrrrrrrrr, Roary roared really loud. All of Roary's friends covered their ears and shuttered with fear. Wow, that was awfully loud they said. I know said Roary.

I never have to fight my enemies, when I open up my mouth and roar at my enemies they all run away. That's great said Roary's friends. Roary's stomach started to growl, my stomach is sure hungry said Roary. His friends asked him what are you going to eat? Roary said I don't know, I will have to catch me something good to eat. Hedda asked what's good for you to eat?. Oh!, I can eat mostly any kind of meat, Hedda got scared and asked, you're not going to eat us, are you?. Oh, no replied Roary, you're my friends. I don't eat friends. Hedda and the rest of Roary's friends were relieved that they he wasn't going to eat them for lunch. Reno rhinoceros asked Roary,so what are you going to eat? Roary said maybe I'll find myself an elk, deer or an hyena or something really good to eat. Oh!, boy said Bonzi are you really going to catch something alive and eat it,?....I hope so, I'm so hungry I could eat and elephant. Farley scream, oh no, not me. Roary said not you, that was just a figure of speech Farley. Poor Farley took a deep breath of relief, that was to close for comfort.

All of Roary friends asked him, if he wanted them to help him find food to eat, he said yes let's go hunting. They traveled through the deep jungle searching for food. Then they came across a mother giraffe. The giraffe saw Roary and started to shout, please Mr. lion don't eat me, I have children to take care of. Roary said no, go on your way I want eat you, you're to tall. The giraffe thanked Roary and ran away, just in case Roary changed his mind. Roary and his friends went through jungle until they met up with a boa constrictor snake. Hedda told Roary there's a big snake with lots of meat to eat and the snake shouted to Roary, I'm not that tasty...besides that, I really don't think you want to tangle with me because of the excruciating pain I can cause. Roary said I don't eat snakes anyway, Yuck. The snake slither on his way. Roary's stomach kept growling and his friends kept saying, don't eat us. We'll find something for you to eat. On their journey through the jungle they met a beautiful toucan bird. Bonzi Said look at those beautiful colors, that has to be a tasty meal. Roary said to Bonzi, to many feathers to be bother with.So they went on their way. They came a across a zebra, drinking water at a little pond, the zebra saw Roary and his friends coming and became very frighten. He said, Mr. Lion please don't eat me. I can tell you where to find a deer, just for you. Oh! boy, Roary said, where can we find a deer to eat? The zebra told Roary to go about two miles to a bambo orchard.

Roary thanked the zebra and they went on their way, two miles into the jungle looking for a good old deer steak to eat. They finally came to to the bamboo trees and sure enough their stood a deer and her fawn, eating bamboo leaves. When Roary and his friends approached the mother deer, Roary mouth was watering just thinking about how tasty a deer steak would be. The mother deer looked at Roary and saw that he was very hungry and became very frighten. She begged him, Oh! please Mr. Lion don't eat me in front of my fawn. It will be terrible for her to see me being eaten. The mother deer told Roary, if he didn't eat her she would tell him where he could find delicious Hyena. They're nice and tender to eat. Roary said okay, his stomach so hungry that his large and small intestines were fighting with each other. The deer told Roary that he could find the hyena's at the rock quarry, where they scavengers hang out. Roary said if he didn't find food soon, he was going to starve to death. His friends felt bad for him and scared for themselves, because Roary was going to start eating on something soon and they didn't want it to be them. They went on their way looking for the hyenas, they soon heard a lot of jolly and hardy laughing. As they approached, the hyena was laughing so hard he was rolling on the ground. They all looked at the hyena and start to laugh just as hard as the hyena, they laugh so hard and so long that Roary forgot how hungry he was.

The hyena stop laughing to tell Roary, if you eat me you will never stop laughing. They all laughed until they made it to the middle of the jungle and stopped because Roary saw an elk grazing in the Grass. Roary thought how good an elk burger would taste. He ran over and bit the elk on his leg, the elk let out a holler with pain and Roary was hollering too because he was in a lot of pain because of his tooth. All his friends looked at him in disbelief, what happen they asked? why you didn't eat your elk burger? Roary told them that It hurt to bad to eat the elk burger, because of the tooth pain he was having. The poor elk limp on away and Roary's friend took him to the animal doctor to get help. The animal doctor told Roary that his tooth had to come out right away. If it didn't the pain would never go away. Roary agreed with the doctor to get the bad tooth out, so he could eat meat again. the doctor told Roary until his tooth healed he would have to eat soft foods and broth for now. Poor Roary's feelings was hurt because he still wanted a tender, juicy steak burger or a delicious rare steak. Oh! well Bonzi told Roary that he was going to bring him some delicious chicken soup from home. Roary said okay, he would at least have some real meat in it. Roary ate his chicken soup and licked his chops and was happy That he finally had some food to eat. Well it wasn't what Roary wanted to eat but he was no longer hungry and his stomach was full and content and he had friends that cared about him and this made Roary, very happy.
