The Importance of Libraries

Updated on December 31, 2011

Where is the one place that you can go to find the resources that you need for a report, a study guide for the SAT or ASVAB? Yeah, you can go to the bookstore and find what you want, but most of the time you have to buy it because you can't exactly take it home. The one place that pops inside of my head in the Library, where all those books are in the shelves ready to be used, pages turning as you read the information that is written in those books.
Books have been around for a long time and we have grown to appreciate it very much. I have grown to appreciate because not only do I find what I need for research for school, but there are so many other books that you can look at.
I think that libraries are very important to a lot of patrons because that is the place where you take your children so they can read a book or you can read the book to them. I go to the library daily because I work in one, As I look at the all the patrons who go to the library, it makes me smile when it comes to seeing the parents bringing their children to read. I see them pick out a book from the shelves and they take them to the couch we have set up and sit down next to their childrent to read. This is when the children start learning how to read or sometimes even pronounce their first words. Along with the books they read, I am sure many libraries have a storytime and that is where they are able to sing and dance, listen to a good story, or even make a craft. The children get so excited when they are able to make crafts, sing and dance.
Libraries are also important because even now as technology advances, the library is also adapting to the many changes. Now many libraries have computer access for the patrons who don't have access to the computers. Some libraries even offer free WiFi for those who use their laptops, ipads, or tablets and that is a way that libraries bring in more patrons. The library I work in offers free access to WiFi and I see that many patrons are taking advantage of that. I see so many students go in to the library because they want a place to study in peace and use their laptop at the same time.
Libraries have so much to offer now more than ever, you can even go the a library website and even download an ebook such as our library system offers. Not only does the library have books to offer anymore, they offer so much more. Most libraries now have movies for both children and adults, music, books on CDs or cassettes. These are just a few examples of what many libraries now offer because I know that where I work at we offer so much to our patrons and they are more than just books.
So, to those of you who like to go to libraries or who want to start to go to the library, I hope that this gives you a reason to want to visit the library more often because they offer so much for free.

I love the library. It is a great resource for people who can't afford to purchase books or access the internet. Great hub!
