What is a poem?

A poem according to my own simple definition is a form of creative writing that uses evocative words to give meaning to situation or event. A poem uses words to draw a picture in the minds of those who write or read it.

Tips About Writing A Poem

Here are the basic steps I use and that entices and keeps my creative juice flowing to write a poem

1. Read many poems. Read and read and read.

If you can't read, you can't write. Simple as that. Poems use evocative words to give meaning to the word within or around you. Reading helps me in the my selection of vocabulary when I start a poem. Words come naturally because I am a good reader.

2. Be Attentive and Appreciative To Your Internal And External World

I don't know about you but for me, this helps a lot. When I am attentive or appreciate of what's happening in or around me, my mind clearly paints a vivid picture that I can later put to words. Smell, color, taste, sound etc. are some things that a write associates with words to express the inner feeling in him or her.

3. Know When To Write And When Not to

This is quit important. There are times a great idea suddenly pops up in your mind and you start writing but all of a sudden your mind becomes blocked. Stop! Take a break. Poem is about creativity and it should come naturally. Don't force yourself to write. Let the poetic words to come to your minds as feathers of birds or leaves blown across the face of the earth.
