gardens of granite ........poem

Updated on June 2, 2014

I stopped today in quiet woods where maples
whisper softly to the sun
and witnessed the names of strangers and kin
who's life on earth long done

two hundred years or more I thought
and still we will remember the dead
how much longer is a memory than
a lifetime to keep inside this head

let the memories remain or take them all
this isn't exactly fair
as deeply pitted as these withering stones
such is the way we care

and when I walk again among the graves of
my own loved and lost
I will know then the awesome challenge
of the survivor and the cost
