Rest My Love: A Dedication to Love That Spans Generations

Updated on November 24, 2012

A curtain drops but once a day

And half the world begins to fade

Yet an inch of dark provides the spark

To scare a little one away

This once was my world, a young one’s curse

And just one thing could my fear disperse

A mother’s sweet passion in lullaby fashion

I’ll forever recall this consoling verse

Rest now my love, night bids you sleep

Fear not the shadows for angels will keep

Darkness descends, but it soon shall end

And in the morning we'll meet again

But as with all children, this one grew up, too

And for the words I once cherished, I found little use

'Till my heart rediscovered in the arms of a lover

How a lullaby heals once a heartache ensues

And as for you my love, the choice is quite clear

When nightmares torment one of our little dears

These lines still relieve, as they once did for me

The anguish of children when it falls on their ears

Rest now my love, night bids you sleep

Fear not the shadows for angels will keep

Darkness descends, but it soon shall end

And in the morning we'll meet again

So the days became weeks, and then months, and then years

And we've shared every moment, each second held dear

My prime came and went, but I'm happy I spent

This life with my Love through the joy and the tears

It's only been days since you left me alone

And the despair I feel now chills me to the bone

But as you're laid 'neath the earth, I whisper the verse

Echoed through our lives and now etched in stone

Rest now my love, night bids you sleep

Fear not the shadows for angels will keep

Darkness descends, but it soon shall end

And in the morning we'll meet again

Thanks Gypsy Rose Lee! Without companionship, it is all not simply futile?
