What is Shayari?

Shayari is a beautiful poetic form in Urdu language. It is nothing but a poet's heartfelt expression on a wide range of topics including love, life, betrayal, hope etc. This musical form of poetry allows a person to express his deep feelings through his words. Sentiments are expressed through rhythmic words written in couplets called sher. Each line of a sher is called as misra. The shers are self contained units and are a marvel of condensation. In just two lines, great emotions and ideas are expressed in a beautiful and powerful manner.

Time or Waqt

Time once gone never comes back. Time is not a tangible entity but indeed a powerful one as its impact can be seen on everyone. Days, weeks, months, years pass by so quickly, leaving behind memories and we wonder where the time went.

Time or Waqt (In Urdu) is never the same. There are bound to be good times as well as the bad times. But even the bad time also teaches us valuable lessons of life. Here are 10 beautiful shayaris by some of the greatest Urdu shayars that perfectly capture the essence of time:

Waqt kis tarah se guzra roz-marra mein Munir

Aaj kal hota gaya aur din hawa hote gaye.

— Munir Niazi

Translation: O Munir, The time passed by like anything in day to day life. Today kept becoming yesterday and just like that, the days vanished into thin air.

Mirza Ghalib is an awesome singer. Did he do an immortal piece on Love?

Great aphoristic sayings relating to Time ...this great seducer of procrastinators, luring them to sleep and miss the boat. Om Shanti!

Thanks for the poetry and language lesson. The quotes are very meaningful, especially "I am not like the time gone by which cannot come back." I'd like to say that as well as have it said to me.

That is a beautiful collection! Your translation is exquisite, although I am fortunate to understand the originals. Shayari is an all time favorite genre of mine, and I keep going to Ghalib's and Gulzar's treasures in between hectic days!
