20 Great quotes on cars

Updated on September 27, 2012
The car is a symbol of status for many.
The car is a symbol of status for many.

Car life

For some Americans, owning a car is a symbol of prestige and status that transports them to their daily car life heaven. They are lost without it. A moment in the sun means having the rooftop down on a black Mercedes, radio blasting while cruising through the Wal-mart parking lot.

Cars are used for recreation, work, smuggling (drugs as well as humans), high speed chases and the inevitable high speed crash. The following quotes should provide a few thoughts, and maybe a chuckle or two, on the highs and lows of that ravaging four-wheeled machine.

Conflict in car heaven :

1 - “Environmentalists have a very conflicted relationship with their cars.” - Tom Arnold

2 - “I don't even like old cars. I'd rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human, for God's sake.” - J. D. Salinger

3 - “Drive-in banks were established so most of the cars today could see their real owners”. - E. Joseph Cossman

4 - “I had more clothes than I had closets, more cars than garage space, but no money.” - Sammy Davis, Jr.

5 - “I think we have to act like stars because it is expected of us. So we drive our big cars and live in our smart houses.” - Maurice Gibb

And then came the high speed chase:

6 - “I'm enjoying the money, the big house, the cars; what ghetto kid wouldn't?” - O. J. Simpson

7 - “I've exercised with women so thin that buzzards followed them to their cars.” - Erma Bombeck

About that car love:

8 - “If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1000 MPG.” - Bill Gates

9 - “No illusion is more crucial than the illusion that great success and huge money buy you immunity from the common ills of mankind, such as cars that won't start.” - Larry McMurtry

10 - “Some ways of using our thinking are really inspiring. There are people who use their thinking to race cars. People use their thinking to build rockets to the moon. It's all just a use of your thinking.” - Michael Nesmith

11 - “The greatest pleasure when I started making money was not buying cars or yachts but finding myself able to have as many freshly typed drafts as possible.” - Gore Vidal

12 - “There is a spiritual hunger in the world today - and it cannot be satisfied by better cars on longer credit terms.” - Adlai E. Stevenson

13 - “We are the first nation in the history of the world to go to the poorhouse in an automobile.” - Will Rogers

14 - The last person to get across that town in under three hours was yelling "The British are coming! The British are coming!" [On Boston traffic] - Lewis Black

High speed pursuit :

Fast cars, slow men, energy supply

15 - “It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow.” - Abner Perney

16 - “To get to know a country, you must have direct contact with the earth. It's futile to gaze at the world through a car window.” - Albert Einstein

17 - "Sometimes when I'm driving behind a big cement truck, I think of how the valve on the truck could suddenly open, spilling cement over my car, encasing me inside and leaving me to slowly fall into an oxygen-deprived coma, from which I awaken five years later to find my wife remarried to my best friend. But then I think maybe I'm just being paranoid, because what are the odds of *that* happening again?" - Jack Handy

18 - "Have you ever noticed? Anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac." - George Carlin

19 - Sex is more fun than cars but cars refuel quicker than men. - Germaine Greer

20 - There are two things no man will admit he cannot do well: drive and make love. - Stirling Moss

Good quotes and an enjoyable hub. When I was young I liked various cars but now I only want something to get me where I want to go at the least cost.
