5 Generations of Special Women (and then some)

Updated on May 7, 2011

Happy Mothers Day!

I'm Thankful for having such a wonderful family.

When it comes to family, I have been blessed. I think maybe I thought that everyone had big families that were as close as ours. Until later on in life when I found myself sitting in Intensive Outpatient Therapy. The counselor asked, "why are you here." As each person told their own stories, I was horrified and shocked. I could not imagine having to grow up the way they did. Needless to say, when it was time for my story, all I could say was that I didn't know.

I thank God everyday for the family I have. I have been surrounded by some very special women in my life. And it all began with Memmaw, my great grandmother.

Daisy A. Manning Selby - My Great Grandmother

My memmaw was the sweetest. She married Hulett Selby and with him had seven children - actually 9, two died shortly after birth. Living their were six girls and one boy. Memmaw could cook like you would not believe and thinking back it seems she always had a smile on her face. I do not remember ever hearing her say one bad or judgemental word about anyone. For as long as I remember, we ate at her house on Friday nights and Sundays after church. A tradition we still carry on in her honor.

I wish I had wrote down some of the "sayings" she used to say. I do remember walking barefoot to her house one day in March and she liked to have flogged me because she said, " bare feet don't hit the ground till May -- your liable to catch cold." She meant business too.

I remember this particular summer day when I was little. Memmaw and her daughter that lived with her were keeping me while mom worked and I was bored and they were going to be busy in the garden. Memmaw called me to the side and handed me a salt shaker then pointed to a red bird in the yard. She told me if I could get close enough to that bird to sprinkle salt on its tail then I could catch it and pet it. Made sense to me. Well I wore myself out chasing birds all day long. I caught Memmaw several different times during the day chuckling to her self as she watched me out the window or from the garden.

When my son and oldest daughter were born, they made five generations. They loved her dearly. I wish my 3rd could have known her even if it was just a little while. She is three years old now. I named her after Memmaw. Her name is Daisy Addison. I would have loved for her to have gotten to hold her just once. Who knows though, Maybe, somewhere in Memmaws passing from this world and Daisys coming into this world, maybe at some point the two of them laid eyes on each other at some point. I was three months pregnant when Memmaw passed away. God rest her soul and thank you for the time we were able to have her. Happy Mothers Day Memmaw!

My Grandmother

My grandmother was born Buelah A. Selby and married David Skelton. They had two children together, my mom and her sister Shirley. Times were tough and they were even tougher when it was only your mom working I suppose. My grandmother, whom I named Mama Boots when little, worked her fingers to the bone for 40 years in a sewing mill in order to put a roof over their heads, pay their bills, and make sure her two girls didn't want for much.

PawPaw was an alcoholic and it was much later in life that he finally decided to quit drinking and go to work, By this time, he found out he had a brain tumor. He died when Mama Boots was still in her early 40's. She was and still is beautiful. She was asked on many a date but declined every offer. I asked her one time, "why?' She just laughed softly as she shrugged her shoulders and said, "because it would be my luck i would find one worse than the one I had." But truth is she has always will love her husband even in death.

Mama Boots is a kind, caring, good woman. We could all take a lesson or two from her. I hope and I pray she has the best Mothers Day ever. She deserves it. I love you Mama Boots. I don't know where I would be without you. I owe you my life and then some! I love you. Happy Mothers Day!

My Mom - I love her so!

It is hard to describe my mom. She has this energy about her that you can feel. When she was younger, she vowed her own children would never have to grow up like she did and we didn't. I remember my mom busting her tail to work, finish college, and still get me to Piano or dance class. She did not have any help financially. Mom has this determination, this drive, this strength like no other. So did Memmaw, Mama Boots, and now Mom. Mom is always learning how to do something new. She does it and does it well. She is beautiful on the inside and the out. She is the best role model I could have ever hoped to have. I watched her walk down the isle to get her college degree. I was so proud for her and of her.

Mom sets goals and she accomplishes them. She and my Step-dad have been married for 25 years or more. They are great together. My mom has always had us around positive people. She is my twin. We are both Gemini. Actually, I was the best birthday present she ever had. i was born on her birthday. I love my Mom dearly. She is the best person a girl could hope to have as a Mom. I love you Mom! Happy Mothers Day!!

2 Special Ladies

My grandmother has two sisters that live together. Neither ever had any children. Annie and Marie are moms to my three. They take care of them while I work. They have actually spoiled them rotten but thats o.k. I am thankful for their support. I love them both dearly as do my kids. Happy Mothers Day Annie and Marie! Thank you so much for all that you do for me.

I am thankful for such a wonderful circle of women. I don't know where I would be without them. I realize each and everyday just how lucky I am. Not only did God bless me with three beautiful children, I came from some good stock of women! I love you all dearly!

Special Note to Mom

And Mom, you will never know how special you are to me. I think that sometimes you think that because of certain events in my life that you were not a good parent. Truth is had I not had such a positive influence like I had in you. Had you not taught me different sometime in life. Had you not already proved that you can do anything you want if it you set your mind to it. Had you not used tough love when you needed too. There is no telling where I may have ended up. You have been my inspiration. You are my hopes for better tomorrows. You are my breath of fresh air. You are my cheerleader and my coach. You are the best Mom a girl could ever hope to have and I love you so much! Happy Mothers Day Mom! I love you dearly!
