The “Time Keeper” by Mitch Albom takes us back to when there was no knowledge of the concept of time. The story is set in a place where there was no clocks and time was meaningless.

This story revolves around Dor, the main character and the very first person who started counting time in numbers.

The other important characters in this story are Sarah Lemon and Victor. Sarah, a girl, trying to find her true love and Victor, a man in his last stages of illness, fighting for dear life. Ali and Nim are childhood friends of Dor.

Dor, Ali and Nim

In the novel, Dor and Ali are in love with each other. Ali adores Dor and enjoys just being with him not minding the fact that Dor was more engrossed in calculations that made no sense to her. Nim, Dor’s close friend, did not understand and was totally puzzled by Dor’s strange ways. Nim never understood what Dor was doing.

Nim never fully understood the impact of Dor's actions. Dor was always calculating using yard sticks and kept a track of the sun's shadows. He also made different structures on a small scale in an attempt to calculate time.

Dor and Ali get married and have three children. In the meanwhile, Nim gets involved in the mission of building a tower that could reach up to the Gods. His plan was to reach the Gods above and defeat them. Dor does not want to join Nim in helping him build a tower and states that he is busy with his activities of trying to calculate time. This angers Nim and he banishes Dor from his kingdom.

Dor and Ali leave their children with Dor’s parents and head out to the hills to live on the high plains. One day Ali falls seriously ill, Dor runs towards Nim’s kingdom to get help. Suddenly he saw the big tower that was being built and started to climb the stairs. All the other people building the tower follow Dor thinking that it was the call of God.

The tower not being able to bear the weight crashes down. Dor is suddenly lifted up into the clouds and disappears.

Sarah Lemon

Sarah Lemon was a good student who excelled in the subject of science. She was head over heels in love with Ethan but Ethan did not love her back. She knew that it was over when Ethan gave back the watch that she had bought for him for Christmas.

Ethan posted all about Sarah Lemon’s love for him on his Facebook Page and claimed that she was delusional to even think that Ethan could be her boyfriend.

Humiliated, Sarah decided to end her life after reading Ethan’s post on his Facebook page that named and shamed her.

Read on to find out more!!

Dor is banished to the caves for having attempted to calculate time. He is given the opportunity to save himself by saving Sarah from impending death and giving her a second chance in life and by preventing Victor from following his wish of freezing his body in the hope of being revived in the future.

Read the book to find out how the story goes. You will be spellbound and will not keep the book down till you reach the very end.

Great book review. I have read this book and I was so interested in a time in life where time was an unknown quantity. That Dor was trying to harness time and figure it out was so interesting to me. You did we'll in not giving away the stories here. I enjoyed reading this!
