Dad and Mom. Loving is what they do!
Dad and Mom. Loving is what they do! | Source

I wrote this poem tonight (4/18/12) for my Dad, whose birthday is April 25th. He'll be 74 and has been my dad since he married my mom in 1964. I'm fortunate to have two living fathers. One who gave me his genes and one who helped form my soul. I have a relationship with both and love both dearly. But it's Dad who raised me and helped me become who I am today. Y'all are reading this poem before he. I wrote it tonight and am sending it in his birthday card.

I don't need to go into history, but my Dad is an awesome man! I hope you enjoy my heartfelt sentiment....

A Father’s Love

A Father’s Love

Is like

No other.

It differs from

That of

A sister,

Brother

Or even

A

Mother.

He’s there through

Success

Confusion

Doubt

And Uncertainty.

His love is so

Strong

It overcomes

All adversity.

He’s always proud

And stands

Strong by your side.

His belief in you

Fuels

Your forward Stride.

The love of a Father

For his Daughter

Is so very

Strong

It’s impossible

For her to falter

For

Very long.

My Dad is my

Strength;

He’s always

Been by my side.

It’s because of

Him

I’m now a Woman

Full of Pride.

Although this

Is written

For your special day,

To you, Dad,

I have this to say:

I love what you’ve

Given me

And I don’t mean things……

It’s because of you

My Heart

Always Sings.

I need you to know, Dad

It’s because of who you are,

That I will always love you

Higher than a Star!

Happy Birthday, Dad!

I love you!!

Aimen, I'm always touched by the comments I receive for this poem. It was written from the heart. My dad is awesome and I just wanted him to know what an impact he's had on my life.

You may be right about our parents being the only ones who have true love for us. It is unconditional and runs very deep.

Thank you for your beautiful comment.

I've just read a poem about Mother's love and now this one!

I really am MOVED! For me, it is only the parents who have true love for you.

      A very nice poem!

I love how you prefaced the poem by stating that this dad in particular shaped your soul. Though genes are a great proportion of who we are, it is who we become that is impacted by how our tender souls have been nurtured. You have been a very fortunate person.

This is a beautiful homage to a good man. Voted up, up and away, beautiful!

This is very sweet i am sure it brought tears to your daddy's eyes. I am also happy that your parent's marriage lasted it meant they were truly in love and made it through all their obstacles. I am proud of those kind of men who do not run off and leave a woman when she's pregnant etc. Men like your dad is rarely found in today's world.

Beautiful. I can completely relate to the words in your poem. My dad just passed last year, and it's been brutal - miss him so much, that I skip breaths sometimes when I'm thinking about him - my dad, like yours was the ultimate safe place for me. His unconditional love, tough and fair nature made me so proud to be his daughter. Your dad sounds just like him in your poem. Every word you typed hits me.

I missed this poem and glad I popped in to catch it today. It is such a beautiful way to honor a father. You are blessed to have two wonderful dads that have put so much into your life. I wish I would have taken more time to express my love for my father when he was still here with us. One day I will be able to let him know how important he was to me.

Ben, I start new lines in order for the reader to read the way I intend. Breaks make you think and allow the words to be absorbed by the mind more easily. Poetry isn't like writing prose; you don't need to have complete sentences, nor do they need to be on one line. I space my words in order to create the rhythm with which the words sing in my head as I write the poem.

    • profile image

This is a very cool poem, and it is a good birthday gift. I have a question: why do you start new lines after only one or two words sometimes, or rather, what was your thought process? It is very interesting.

Shauna - My eyes are filled with tears. You had to have 2 fathers in your life. One, alone would never be able to help 'form' the woman who has become the strong, wise, talented and beautiful woman you have become.

I'm sure God had this in mind for you as you were being created from His pure love and light.

What a true classic - your dear dad and this lovely heartfelt hub presentation and tribute and so appropriate to read a day before Father's Day but then again everyday should be Father (and Mother's day) in my opinion.

My dad was my best friend (as was my mum) and I was a only child and we had a small family.

My dad was a veteran of World War II for 6 years as a Canadian soldier and he wrote 59 novels all unpublished in civilian life including a memoir of his war years.

Thank you my friend. I'm glad you stopped by. Maybe it'll keep HP from flagging this as "idle"? ha ha but not ha ha!

Seriously, thank you for seeing me the way you do, Maria.

Lots of love coming your way!

Wow, Cloud! I'm honored you're sharing this. That pleases me. As for the complete life - not quite. Writing full time is on my bucket list. Once that happens, I'll be complete. I am, however, proud of the job I've done with raising my son pretty much as a single parent most of his life. We have a great relationship. Now, if he'd just get a job......!

Awesome heart felt poetry here Brave, I love how you embrace touching words towards your dad, it brings back memories of my own, and I also enjoyed reading the intro as well.

As a mother of a 20 year old I sense that you are proud of raising him as well, and so your life is complete, and this is all reason for writing with true inspirational words of wisdom that count a great deal for all of us.

Lovely job voted up and getting shared elsewhere for sure.
