A Gift Lost

Updated on September 9, 2014

By: Wayne Brown

A very special time…a moment to remember

Catches on fire from the smallest ember

Its flame builds and grows with every inspire

Until it becomes its own raging, glowing fire

Life, a wonderful gift…a simple point of one’s birth

The moment one becomes a species upon this earth

From that single point on, what we do with it is ours

Our time here is limited; controlled by greater powers

Each of us can do…from birth, just about most anything

Life is a number of days until we hear the angels sing

What shall we do with such a wonderful gift?

What can we accomplish to make the Heavens lift?

Perhaps not as much as we think…not so much at all

For ever so many will waste it; never try in their fall

Far too many will just live life day by passing day

Not once thinking of the gift that slowly slips away

We need not do great things in what we achieve

Our approach may well determine the mark we leave

Our attitude as to whether we can or cannot

May well be the stone that casts our life’s lot

Grab life with a gusto with each coming sunrise

Look for opportunities in front of your eyes

Take all that you encounter and give it a lift

As you embrace life…God’s wonderful gift

Your words are stunning and I love to read them. I am so pleased that I tracked you down again, I have been pre-occupied of late but am now trying to get back on track here at HubPages. Your words arestunning and I loved the video too. Voting up of course and pressing your buttons too.

Your past and the experiences you have had are your muse...though painful, it has provided you with a depth and sensitivity that no writer can trainer for in any classroom or find in a book. Those emotions are framed in moments of time that you do not necessarily want to relive but you vividly remember how you felt and how you never wanted anyone else to feel in that instant. In that sense, you have been given a tool that allows you to convey the saddness and, yes, the joys of life quite well. That makes the words which you have written here all the more endearing to me for I know that you can appreciate those moments. Thanks much. WB

Yes indeed very beautiful, listening to Van Morrison while reading gave me a better feeling, life is precious, short and we must live every day like it's our last. I have lost a lot of time in my life, with the loss of my kids 14 years ago, life has not been much worth living for me.

So I bide my time and try to find that medium between happy and sad. I scribe with the intent to leave a path to my kids to find the broken heart their daddy left this plane with. Great work Wayne, I truly felt each word. A great poet like yourself has an audience, why? because you leave them with stirred and coming back for more. Well done, bravo. Keep writing, keep writing.

@breakfastpop...Good to see you back. Hope you are rested and ready to write! Thanks much. WB

@rahul0324...That is exactly the way I feel and probably the reason the words were able to flow when I only had the first line but had no idea what it was related to subject-wise. Thanks for the good words. WB

Hi again, Wayne! I heard from you from epher, and I think from Epigramman and Vincent Moore, perhaps...maybe others. I've heard your name around here. Glad I finally stopped by! See ya soon!

An excellent message for all of us, but it strikes me extra special as I have a good friends kid who is graduating in a couple of weeks...and this would make a great poem for him to read....

This would be an excellent Hallmark Card!

@scrittobene...Thank you, Maria. I am proud to be a fan. So glad you liked this one. It came quite easy as most of my poems do. I guess that is the reason I sometimes label myself "The Lemonade Stand Poet" if I am standing beside my little lemonade stand reciting the gibberish that comes into my mind. I am so glad that you found this one inspiring. WB

Wayne this is a most inspiring wonderfully written poem. Not only does it have sound philosophical advice, but it compels the reader to appreciate life even at a basic level. This is achievable for all and leaves the reader feeling inspired. I take this opportunity to thank you for visiting my Hub and for your rave review. :) Cheers, Maria D'Alessandro (Melbourne Australia).

I'm a little tardy getting to this one, Wayne, but at least I finally made it. Grab life with it! I came to that realization almost six years ago and I have not forgotten that lesson. Each day may be the last and I'm going to wring every ounce of enjoyment that I can out of each day.

Thank you for the great reminder! Beautifully written!

@Diana Lee...Thank you. You know, I don't try to work at it. I just go with the hook when it hits me. On this one, all I had was the first line and I really did not know what it meant. So I wrote it down and the rest just flowed. About halfway through, I decided this had to be about life's celebration. It took all of five to ten minutes to write. It does not work that way when I attempt to force it...each line comes much harder and takes far longer. In that sense that things do come to me, I am truly long as the well does not run dry! LOL! Thanks so much. WB

@Poetic Fool...You are quite the poet yourself and I do appreciate your kind words. That last stanza really drove it home for me as well. My point was that our life does not have to be spectacular as long as it has direction and meaning. In the end, that is how we leave our achievement and our mark upon this world. WB

@fpherj48...Thank you. I thought of you when I chose that Van Morrison song. It is long but it seems to carry the message of the poem quite well. I too find Morrison very unique and a talent far beyond the level of appreciation that he has received. He is his own man when it comes to the music...he walks alone and above the fray. Thanks much. WB

@Vellur...Thank you. So glad that you found it an enjoyable read. Thanks much. WB
