Dear Baby,

As I am writing this to you, you are safely growing in your mother's womb, getting a little bigger and stronger by the day. You are not due to this world until the first week of January, I've been told, but I have to admit, I have been thinking a lot about you lately. I don't know if you're a little girl ot a little boy. Nobody knows actually except for the doctors. See, your Mom has chosen not to know, so you will be a surprise to everyone, and I like it that way. You've got a fine mother. I don't know her that well, having met her only twice, but she impressed me with her personality and her qualities. Needless to say, I like her a lot. On the other hand, I know your father quite well : he's my son. And I can tell you right now, he has no idea of the responsabilities that are going to fall upon his shoulders, the very minute we hear your first cry. But he'll manage, just like I did, Just like my father and his father before him did.

As impatient as I am for you to join the clan, I am also worried. The thought crossed my mind that something could go wrong with you or your Mom. You know, this kind of nervous feeling one experiences before boarding an airplane. We know everything will be fine in the end, but we can't help thinking about it anyway. But so far, you're both doing just fine. Isn't an ultrasound the greatest thing ? Too bad we can't just look at yours for now !

What worries me too is your future. This world you're coming into is not human friendly. Of course, we all want the best possible for you, but we live in troubled times and I don't foresee your life being so easy, wishing of course I am wrong. I am the first generation in our family who hasn't been called to go to war in over a hundred years.Your Dad is the second generation My dearest wish for you is that you will be part of the third generation.

The irony is that, as time progresses, humanity should learn from experiences and mistakes, but as our life is made easier all the time with new technology, why do I get the notion that somehow, we are going backwards. One would think that with such powerful means as the internet, for example, communication between people as well as education in general would improve. Is it the case ? I'm not sure. Anyway, we'll have plenty of time later to discuss this as you grow up and learn. Because you don't know it yet, but you and I will talk a lot, provided I am around for some time.

You're coming to this world with a lot of pluses on your side. You will be born into a close knit, loving family, and even though it can be overbearing sometimes, this alone, Child, is priceless ! Both your parents are good providers, so you will probably always have what you need until you fly off the nest. Both of them work in the medical field, so your health and growth will be over scrutinized. Both sets of your grandparents are alive and reasonably well, so you can be sure they'll all stand in everybody's and each other's way just to catch a glimpse of you. And try to spoil you rotten too !

But in the end, your life will be yours, and your decisions and choices will determine which direction you want to go. Most likely, you will be baptized and that's where we'll draw the line. You will be left to make your own decisions as you grow up and discover the world, but you'll never be alone to do so, you can always rely on any of us for advice and help if you so wish. We'll be there for you.

Never underestimate the power of education, it will get you where you want to go. Never overestimate the power of money : it'll buy you things, but it's not what ultimately will make you happy. Enjoy your childhood, this worry-free time that will never be repeated for as long as you'll live. Be kind to others, as there is no real justification for not being so. Never miss an opportunity to laugh. Because you see, in the end this will be my only wish for you : I want you to be happy in life, whichever way you choose to get there. If you make happiness, yours and others as well, your purpose in life, you have it made, Kid !

Love,

Your Grandfather (you know, the crazy, ugly one!)

This was such a sweet, precious letter to an unborn grandchild. A grandfather's wishes , hopes and dreams but also his worries for the grandchild's future. Your words moved me so and I found it to be absolutely beautiful. I have always wondered how it would feel to become a grandparent, but then again, I have always wondered how it would feel to become a parent. . .

      Votes up and sharing!

My blessings and good wishes to you and your grandchild.

Such a nice letter. You are going to be a grandpa, how delightful. I have ten grandchildren now. The love we feel for our grandchildren seems to be multiplied. We love them as unconditionally as we love our children, without all the over familiarity to temper it. When the car pulls up bringing them to see you, the joy is overwhelming. Enjoy it!

First, thank you Break of Dawn for sharing this letter at FB. I am on my thur morning wake up time. This was at the top of my looky list or actually the one after a pic of my great nephew and niece. So, the treasure of this letter Austin is the lump in the throat affect. However, it also gave perspective for today too.

Thank you more so Austin for taking the time to put into words your hopes, dreams, and concerns. I think writing it out set it in cement for many, I know it did for me. Not having a child, yet with empathic tendencies, I 'feel' your joy and thank you for that gift. Sharing a bit, I use to pitch horseshoes with a group of Ugly dudes, who we are all OG=old guys now heading or just over 60. Ugly is an acronym or Understanding God Loves You = UGLY.

Congratulations and blessing upon you and family

      Mitch

Thank you Break of Dawn, for your very kind and moving comment. Becoming a parent made me experience the biggest natural high I ever felt in my life. To me, there is nothing comparable, except maybe becoming a grandparent, and that's just around the corner, so we'll see...

What a charming idea to your first grandchild. Although, I'd include a little addendum on your life story and family history because those too often get lost when the grandfather passes on. Voting this Up and Useful.

Hi Alocsin and thank you for taking the time for reading this story. I can assure you that I have no intention to pass on anytime soon, but you gave me some good ideas about writing on family history and my life, for which I am grateful.

Thats a lot to think about,Austin. Whether we can let go of the fact that kids have to make their own decisions, no matter how right or wrong they are....how far you can go to protect them. Thanks for bringing it out here! I am sharing.

Wow, such beautiful and thoughtful writing. I love this bit of advice "Never underestimate the power of education, it will get you where you want to go. Never overestimate the power of money : it'll buy you things, but it's not what ultimately will make you happy."

      Beautiful! Voting up and sharing!

Oh my, this is one of the most beautiful and poignant hub I've ever read this half month of December, so far. I love the idea of writing to your unborn grandchild and even spoke about the progress and experience of humanity and the wisdom you are sharing.

You see, I've never met both my grandfather although I was blessed to grow up with both my lovely grandmothers. I was told they were wonderful and jolly people. I can just imagine how lovely it will be for your future grandchild to grow up with a wise grandfather as you.

This hub is so precious and endearing. I'd love to post this on the H.O.W. (Humanity One World) page on Facebook and will share it here for those who have missed this great piece.

Voted up, beautiful and very interesting!

Little Arthur was born the day before Christmas, quite early but he's doing well. A recent picture shows a witty grin inherited from his father and his grandfather. No doubt he will expect another letter soon. Thank you for your kind words and following.

What a sweet and touching letter filled with good advice. Your grand-baby has a beautiful thing to read when he gets old enough - something to always treasure from Grandpa. I wrote one of these to my sons son 4 years ago .....and people still come by to read it and comment. Hopefully it has spurred many people to write something to their grandchildren too.

      Beautiful!!
