A Halloween Poem: "Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall"

Updated on October 30, 2015

John has many years writing experience including a Writing School course "Writing for Profit." He has written text for children's books etc.

A Little History of the Tale

The Magic Mirror was said to be owned by the Evil Queen (or Wicked Witch) and has been depicted in different versions as either a hand mirror or a wall mirror. Every morning, the Evil Queen asked the Magic Mirror the same question "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" or "Magic mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?". The mirror always replies: "My Queen, you are the fairest in the land." The Queen is always pleased with that, because the magic mirror could never lie.

It is best known from the popular fairy tale "Snow White.

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall

by John Hansen © 2015

Mirror, mirror, on the wall

Who's the fairest of them all?"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"It once was you my lady fair,

But your beauty is no longer there."

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"Don't lie to me you piece of glass,

I'll shatter you upon the grass!"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"I cannot lie My Mistress dear,

Your looks are dead, like you I fear."

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"Who says a zombie can't look good,

I seek the truth now, understood?"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"The truth I tell, it's what I do,

No one alive looks worse than you."

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"You silly piece of antique junk,

I'll toss you in the attic trunk!"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"A ghoul's a ghoul by any name,

To lie to you I am not game."

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"Shut up, shut up! You're cracked and weak,

I'll hear no more, don't even speak!"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"But My Queen, each time you ask

I cannot shirk my given task."

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"I will not listen to your cries,

Cease your chatter and your lies!"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"You are decayed and rotting fast,

Your beauty wasn't made to last."

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"Who was the fool who cast the spell

That made you magic, pray do tell?"

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"T'was you My Highness, Wicked Witch,

It serves you right, you silly bitch!"

Real Life Influence

It is thought that the German folk tale "Snow White" was influenced by Maria Sophia Margaretha Catherina von Erthal. After the death of Maria Sophia's birth mother in 1741, her father Philipp Christoph, the King, remarried Claudia Elisabeth von Reichenstein. Who it is said was domineering and greatly favored the children from her first marriage.

Philipp presented Claudia with a "talking" mirror from Lohr Mirror Manufacturers as a gift. The upper right corner of this mirror contains a reference to self-love (Amour Propre). This mirror “talked” in aphorisms and the mirrors from Lohr were given the reputation of “always speaking the truth”.

Queen Claudia's iconic mirror, referred to as “The Talking Mirror,” is still on display today at Spessart Museum in the Lohr Castle, where Maria Sophia was born.

Aphorism

noun: a terse saying embodying a general truth, or astute observation, as “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton).

Trick or Treat! It's me the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown ...uh ...John, making my rounds in HP Town this dreary, cold, wet and blustering windy night of Halloween ...hahaha

I have been missing in action on HubPages for the past four days, and now I am enjoying all the "treats" here of writing this night, especially your perfect poem for Halloween. Love the wicked satire in your poem. Really enjoyed the history of the mirror and Snow White, as I've always wondered about the true meaning behind the mirror.

I used that same great image there in my beast of a husband hub hahaha.

Happy Halloween and I am off to find more gems that I have missed ... Keep up the great writing.

It is really entertaining and interesting. I didn't know the origins of that infamous mirror. It is a different spin and different take on a classic, that we have enjoyed all through our childhood. And I must say you did a wonderful job of it. Interesting pictures too!

Chitrangada, thank you for that wonderful comment. I don't know what it is about the Snow White story, but this is the second parody poem I have written inspired by that story. I thought I would play on the vanity of the Evil Queen, and put a twist on it for Halloween. Glad it worked and that you also liked the origin of the mirror and pictures. Thanks.

The magic mirror in Snow White...and reflections of Dorian Gray. I can't believe I almost missed this one, John.

"Who was the fool who cast the spell

That made you magic, pray do tell?"

      ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

"T'was you My Highness, Wicked Witch,
