A Hummingbird Haiku

Updated on August 31, 2016

The Delicate Hummingbird
The Delicate Hummingbird
Kissing a sweet Flower
Kissing a sweet Flower
Wings of Love
Wings of Love

The Hummingbird is

So small and so beautiful

She sings a sweet song

As friendships in life

She flutters so high and low

And stays not for long

Sadly sings, "Adieu"

When often she must fly far

But still she loves you.

Do not shed a tear

Her wings will sprout again soon

She'll stay awhile then

Think of this each day

And you will see a new sky

Holding her for you.

The hummingbird is a fascinating feathered friend that can entertain us in a peaceful & pleasant way. Just being outdoors and watching this petite bird fluttering around a feeder in your yard is a calming experience. Their gracefulness and colorful variety seem to attract any curious individual.

I have added a video below so that you can have the pleasure of seeing these lovely creatures in action. Enjoy!

A Beautiful sight to see

Oh heavens Au fait....I'm not a poet by any stretch. I've fooled around and wrote a few, just for variety. You're too kind.

I LOVE watching the birds, squirrels (we have Geese too. A Mama goose with her babies paddle down the creek) and the cutest little chipmunk that darts back & forth across the yard. He's always alone....no others with him. Must live in a bachelor pad under the deck! Butterflies and humming birds are my favorite. There's also a mean old Mr. Snapping Turtle who sits in the sun on a big rock in the middle of the creek. He hates it when we walk around down there...LOL (my grandkids & I)

Oh gosh....racoons galore & deer. The coyotes don't come anywhere near the edge of the woods. That's fine with me (and my cat!)

Our woodpeckers have done a real number on my redwood deck. They tap out holes everywhere! LOL... Good thing I appreciate nature and love animals...eh?

Thanks for the visit. You're the best. Peace, Paula

It is a lot of work to feed humming birds. Years ago I used to put tons of feed out for every kind of bird and the squirrels and we even had possums and raccoons coming to visit. I kept the feeders full and fresh water available all the time.

Goldfinches are interesting to watch and the interaction between them all, birds, squirrels, etc., was interesting. We had a ladder back woodpecker, fairly large, and it would listen to one of the mouthy birds yap at it for about a minute at the longest and then it would rap that smaller bird on the head a few times with it's hammer beak. I got the impression the smaller bird was hassling the woodpecker. I really miss all my birds and little animals. They were always fun to watch.

I don't know how I missed this haiku. Didn't realize you were a poet, too. I've only written one poem and it's included in my article about wolf and warf spiders. Seems like there isn't anything you can't do and do well, Paula, and that's great. Enjoyed your little video too.

I have only a little while most days to answer comments and/or write, and that is why it takes me a while to get to everything sometimes. I'm sure you have a life apart from HP and things you must tend to before worrying about HP. I know you'll answer when you can. Hope you're having a good day . . .

    Hello fpherj48

indeed enjoy-able both the Haiku as well as entertaining video. One line though 'do not shed a tear ' caused just opposite as I was envisioning a last fall picture of one 'left behind' - calling ( her ?) "he" who was during all season frequent visitor both on the feeder as well as on the flowers planted special for hummingbirds. ' He ' stayed in the area well past their departure time from our area ( last week in September), I was feeding him, bringing inside the feeder to melt a frozen water, just to note that on the first snowy day he never came back..."Thinking of this..." waiting to see the first one back again, in my mind it will be the same, wiping away my tear and we will have a happy new season.

On your masterpiece haiku voting up and beautiful.

    Peace with us.

Audrey....Hello! This is old, actually, written 20 months ago. I believe Linda Sue recently shared it. Thank you so much for the nice compliment. I love Hummingbirds too...and have a feeder just off my back deck. They are adorable little birds.

Poetry never really interested me, much to my Dad's dismay. He wrote positively exquisite poems, songs, etc......a total Romantic. I was a rough, tough, scuff 'em up Tom boy.

Before joining HP, I did not even know what "Haiku," meant. This is my first and last attempt.......except I think I did Sunshine's Birthday tribute is in Haiku form......

I'm big on challenges. I did this to simply see if I could. It was first of TWO, and I've done no others since. Unfortunately, I don't get to see many due to my dogs and cats always hanging around. In fact, the only bird feeder that attracts any sort of winged friends is one that we have put on the other side of the property, hung really high up.

Birds are not stupid, that's for sure......I wish I was a bird!!

    Thanks for your comment.

This is a wonderful poem and so well written on the subject of friendship. It is true that some go up and down and in and out of your life.

OK, please drive safely to pick up those boys...

    Never "meaning to be mysterious"...

LUCKY Cats is my dear friend Kathy. I could not help but read your comments back and forth.

I think you also are referring to my good homey (the LORD). He is very very smart... (usually...hee-hee!) I would trust the LORD with my life.

    Love you, Paula... Maria

Maria.....I need to ask....Is "lucky" your alter-ego...your inner spirit/voice or a real friend?

Your second paragraph made me catch my breath! Yours is the 2nd rather "prophetic-sort' of comment I received in just a few days. What I mean to say is, the comments ring to me quite like a psychic reading.

Perhaps I'm spending too much time in cyber space?...lol....I'm just saying.......

I always TRY to be gentle to myself, but as my life and schedule will hear nothing of "pampering" one's self...it seems to be more of a struggle than it's worth.

Like right this minute!!! I should be on the road driving to pick up 2 of my favorite boys in the whole world from the summer recreation bus!! MOVE IT, Gram Dawg!!!

Bye, Maria.......until the next time! Thank you sooooo very much for your warmth and sweetness.

    Hugs to you........Effer

    Oh Paula, my dear woman,

The more I learn about you... LUCKY has a way of drawing people out (she has been my bud from waaaay back).

May you be extra gentle to yourself this month and surround yourself with those who love you... so many old and NEW friends, as well as the exquisite beauty of nature that speaks to us in so many ways as we allow ourself to listen.

You can surely 'do haiku'... it exudes from your heart and now I know why... Voted UP and very beautiful, like you. Love, Maria

This is a beautiful haiku and so touching too...we all know you've picked one of my favorite subjects AND you linked to one of my hubs! Amazing ;) Now, I'll have to go back and link to yours....payback and all that.

Seriously, voted up, awesome and beautiful!

Just FYI ...have you noticed no Amazon links are showing up? They say no data found, And, when I clicked on your link to my hub I get various adds? Seems the Gremlins are afoot!

Lucky Cats...you are too sweet. I appreciate your kind and consoling words. It will be 9 years this month and each day of these years, I have thought of her, in one way or another and missed her until my heart feels like it weighs a ton. She was more than my sister.....my friend, my confidante, my idol....my dearest, closest friend. Our bond, even now, is indestructible.

You, my dear have seriously exposed your love of nature! Seems like a wonderful thing to love!! Peace, my lady.

Quick, send that definition too!

How much thought did you give to placing a CAT near a hummingbird? Did you never watch Sylvester and Tweety bird? I tawt U taw it!!!..............................Peace!

I am so sorry to hear about your sister. Such a great loss. I have two brothers, but no sister...I Always wished I'd had a sister. I am very sorry you lost her.

This year, I decided to volunteer w/the local Wildlife Rescue Center in my county. Each week, I help out in the clinic, where tiny "nudies," larger nestlings and fledglings are housed in either incubators, heat boxes or wired cages. We help injured birds, too...it has been so rewarding and I've learned so much. I never knew, until I moved to SE Kansas and met the Swallows, and then, upon returning home, how much I like, even love birds. They are magical and their songs so sweet. Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you to underscore how I relate to your love of these beautiful beings. Kathy

Look at you, delving into the realm of haiku....and doing it damn well I might add! Please, no modesty...this is very good work.

Now consider this: I happen to love hummingbirds and I happen to think you are the cat's meow, so maybe my opinion is a tad tainted....but not by much.

Great job Paula! Voted up and away, as an old Hub friend used to say!

Lucky Cats... I am overwhelmed by your kind and generous comment. It is obvious you have a sincere appreciation for our world of birds.

My sister and I had always talked of becoming involved in nature walks, discovering wild flowers and educating our selves on "birds, birds, everywhere." ...once we had both retired.

Tragically, we lost my precious sister to cancer a few years ago.....but in her honor, I make sure to spend time "in nature" even if it is simply marveling at the flight of a butterfly.....it makes me feel close to Pat and brings me peace. Thank you so much, lucky..........

Oh! pfherj48! I am in awe of the Haiku you've written in honor and delight w/beautiful Hummingbirds. Everything is just right. These words, too, bring to mind my deep love for Swallows...in SE Kansas, our Barn Swallows return ever year, in late March or early April. Just as you've described so beautifully here, their presence is like a good friend; their winsome ways are so touching and, their stay is far too short. This year; my friend Al tells me, the Swallows are not reproducig as much due to the extreme heat. He keeps several bird baths filled w/fresh, cool water for them but, they aren't nesting as much . I miss seeing them . I hope to visit shortly, and am praying for cooler, rain soaked weather for the sweet Swallows and all the other birds and animals there. Lovely, Beautiful, Awesome.
