A Night Out In The Pub - A Poem

Updated on July 5, 2012

A typical night out in Sandwich town.....

Source

Glad rags on and it's off to the pub,

We'll take the shortcut into town.

Along the riverbank path

But it's all over grown

Since we came this way last.

Stingers attack,

Brambles catch my tights,

Cobwebs in my hair,

I started out looking nice...

Honest!.. Never mind!

We emerge from the undergrowth

And walk into town

To see what the pubs have going on tonight.

We want music and beer

With other people too,

The atmosphere needs to feel just right!

The first pub we see,

Has a lady singing a tune,

There's no-one at the bar,

So to herself she croons,

And to the barstaff,

Looking bored,

Checking the time...

The next pub's more lively

With people playing pool,

They all seem very young though,

Kinda make's me feel

Like some old fool,

Out on the town

With ladders in my tights

And cobwebs in my hair...

Wait.. What's that we hear?

Turning the corner

The music's very loud

It's a disco no less,

We expect to see a crowd

Of people

Dancing

And having fun,

But looking in the window,

There is only one

Person,

Sitting at the bar!

Doesn't anyone go out any more?

Finally we find it

The pub we're looking for,

A band playing covers

Of 80's music

And a crowd

Of people

Stood at the door...

Smoking!

This is the one....

So in we go to find

Fewer people are inside...

Nothing like a smoking ban

To keep the people out

Of the pub!

Still,

The air is nice and clear!

We get a drink and find a seat,

And find ourselves

Looking

At the rear

Of a man playing pool

With his jeans hung too low....

I find I have a dreadful fascination

With this fashion faux pas!

I need another drink...

So a few drinks too many,

And I finally have a dance,

To something that was once a hit

For "The Human League",

I still can't help a glance

At the man playing pool....

His bum on display

Shamelessly

Is this some new rule

Of fashion?

I try to tear my eyes away...

So last orders now,

And shots are on the cards..

Sambuca just to finish off

Wanton disregard

For how our heads will feel

In the mornings light,

When we wake up knowing

We just don't feel right,

And we're not young any more...

The night ends at the kebab shop,

For the whole of Sandwich town,

Garlic sauce

And chilli

And a meat that makes me frown...

Has anyone ever eaten one of these sober?

I wonder...

My only hope is,

I'll keep it down!

A group of people having a great time, though it's frustrating when one wants to find a place to have fun, but it's either too crowded or too smoky, etc., Jennifer, a fun poem, and true to life. Voted up.

I can identify with this poem so well especially the kebab at the end of the night and no I don't think sober people would go near them :)

It must be so nice to not have a care in the world. I am am such an introverted person. I would have probably picked the first place with the lady singing to herself.
