A Refrain of Blood

Updated on October 20, 2010

Pop crackle

boom thud boom!

His ears immune to the report

time ticks on

blood repaying blood

neighbor falling

as he stands up

walking in shadow

praying for blindness upon those he must silence

knowing his mission

stands at center of discipline

What he is told rings in his ear

as stab, slash, splatter

another takes his place

as his hands he whipes

on his flag to clean them

memory not giving him much else

to comfort pangs of wonder

at the work

of death held tightly in hand

prrapapppa crackle boom!

who felt its end?

he may not know

but if he goes where

he's bid, he may find out soon

Don't pity him and sully his hands

for he takes your place

as you sit at home.

Let those whose backs

born feeble by natures cruel trick

stand alone, innocent,

of the charge placed on the man

who's every day

thereafter being a walking shadow

without release till

God on high absolves him of all

but his duty well done

and honors well earned.

Now i assume that this is a portrayal of every soldier who dons a uniform and fights for their country or beliefs. I hope so.

You are absolutely right. I often find something ironically amusing in unsuccessfully trying to demure before sweet, wonderful and gracious fellows like you.

...never hide from a good compliment - god knows it's hard these days to get a lot of people to say something nice ......

lol sometimes as you complement me so I wonder if you have kissed the blarney stone but I accept your plaudit with good grace and will count you an honest man and myself a little less honest for wanting to hide from it.

....well that poetic refrain certainly raised all levels in my blood ..... exciting, bold, daring, courageous with loads of bravado and plenty of nerve and verve - well, all vital words which would describe someone like you!!
