A Shadow Passed

Updated on April 29, 2014

My feet were hurting,

I was tired and weary,

and the street was quiet and dreary,

though a shadow passed

a long way off,

with a bright, black umbrella,

I clenched my teeth,

holding back a dry cough,

the rain had abated,

and it was a bit mild,

these were terms that nature hated,

people watched me from a window,

from a building along side the road,

to them I looked wild,

and I turned towards the skies,

because I knew I was too poor

for their watchful eyes,

some would pray,

others threw small change my way,

mostly as a cheap trick,

not caring at all that I was weak and sick,

my mind kept spinning and my thoughts turning,

and my stomach was burning,

because I was starved,

every sin in my mind started reeling,

I thought of robbing, stealing,

killing,

but I wasn’t that type of man,

my eyes grew tired and red,

the hunger was a sickness

that stuck to my stomach and head,

they turned off their lights,

clothed and fed,

and wondering if people like me

were just better off dead.

Brilliant perceptions! The view of the homeless and starved touch the very soul through your words.

No not better off dead , it is the best way a discription could be said by you. Frank.

You captured this so effortlessly, the hubber "AE" she wrote a similar piece . Goes to help look into the mind of mankind.

That why those who give in to being , men that think and practice evil , will soon find out , more about this life.Their own.

And I remember you writing about that Florida mother also.

      Bless.

I actually have heard people say such things and it makes me feel such outrage. Oh Frank, this is a beautifully sad and open voice on a taboo subject. Society convinces itself that the food kitchens and shelters are taking care of these people. We know that is not true. Bless you for caring and bringing the truth into the open light of day.

This is the problem with the fake beggars. The true homeless people get overlooked. Great hub.

Beautiful Frank, Great imagery... That look in their eyes, what they might be feeling. The pain on their face, begging for change and looking ashamed.

Giving them money never seemed like enough, when I would walk away I would think if they would be warm enough during the night.

I used to have a worry that money given would go to a vice so I would never give money but I would drive off, get some food, and drive back. It never really satisfied me because I knew that was only going to hold him over for a tiny while.

Do you like to put yourself in others shoes because you see a lot of it?

      Many Blessings

Hey Frankie i guess people like that really prefer that they are better off dead than being alive and suffering such fate.

Lovely illustration in your poetic words. I hope your fine all the way over there in Canada :)
