A Stay of Execution

A Stay of Execution

He paid me a visit late one night
it was about a week ago.
I did not hear him enter
and I did not see him go.
Entering without invitation
intrusive and silent, he stole,
invading my inner sanctum
to exact his mean-spirited toll.

When I awoke the next morning
I knew that he had come.
I didn't feel quite right, you see,
things felt a tad bit plumb.
He'd left headache and weakness
that moved in and rattled about.
A fog descended and fever hit,
and I was rendered much less stout.

For several days I moped around
feeling somewhat gray,
and then I sought the doctor
for an execution stay!
Now, finally I'm recovering
and feel much more like me...
It took a good strong antibiotic
to make that mean germ flee!
