A Touch of 'Heart'

Zaira at a young age with her android. (Art by me)

Original inspiration for this story

Zaira woke with a scream. Tears mixed with cold sweat and streamed down her face as she desperately tried to regain air in her lungs; to calm herself from the nightmare. An all too familiar figure approached the bed, mechanical blue eyes glowing in the dark, like electric ice.

'Hello girl...'

"No..." she whimpered, backing up against the headboard. She brought her knees up to her chest, curling into a ball and squeezing her eyes shut. Her hands covered her ears but the voice still whispered to her.

'What kind of fun shall we have today?'

The girl cried silently while her body trembled out of control."Go away!"she mentally pleaded."Just go away!"

A pair of arms awkwardly embraced her. The skin was soft like a humans, but cold and lifeless. It was the same cold skin that wanted to break her and shatter her very being. In a way, it had.

Zaira whimpered helplessly, wracked with fear. She hummed loudly to herself, her voice tightly contained beneath the tears, in an attempt to hide from what was going on around her.

The arms let her go.

It was a good while before she was able to calm herself back into reality. When she was able to open her eyes she realized it was not the mechanical blue she had been seeing, but instead a gentle gold that watched her in the dark. The malice she had felt wasn't there; it was only her mind recreating it.

Zaira's fear quickly turned into anger.

"I told you never to touch me!" she shouted at the android. She flicked a light on, glowering at it with her emerald eyes. It only stared back at her, expressionless. It couldn't hear her, and she knew that, but she continued to shout at it. "I should have you turned into scrap metal! What the hell were you thinking?"

It didn't move.

"Answer me!" she snapped.

Again, it didn't move.

She let out a string of Italian curses that didn't normally line her vocabulary, blindly reaching for the closest object she could get a hand on. It ended up being a screwdriver. She threw it at the android like a knfie. The screwdriver peirced through its fake skin where a heart should have been. Sparks danced around the handle.

It's eyes flickered.

Zaira gasped. She must have hit something that was messing with it's electrical current. She was afraid that its main frame might fry.

"Quick, take it out!" she signed frantically to the android, knowing that if she touched the screwdriver she would probably get shocked.

It did as instructed, setting the tool on the bed. Zaira let out a sigh of relief as its eyes returned to normal. She would have to check out the damage later.

The raven haired girl looked over apologetically at the android. What had happened to her long ago wasn't its fault. Her rational mind knew that. But when she relasped, her mind was far from rational and the mechanical being usually got the brunt of it. It wasn't its fault.

Still, that was the first time it had ever hugged her...

"I'm sorry," Zaira signed. The android watched her hands, processing the movements into words to be stored in its memory. "I'm so sorry. You're not to blame for anything."

She crawled off the bed and said, "I'm going to hug you" before slipping her arms around around its waist. Zaira rested her head against its chest, listening contently to the quiet whirling and ticks that indicated the proper function of a machine.

The android waited till Zaira's breathing had gone deep with sleep before accessing the internet again. It logged into the chatroom it had created earlier titled [help].

There were two other users in the chatroom who had replied to its earlier request for help.

[[Huy: Hey!! 16 is back!]]
((Kibana: How did it go?))
<<16000385: Girl did not like hug. Please suggest another method.>>
[[Huy: Eeeeeh? No way!]]

The Italian woke up again sometime in the afternoon, still groggy from lack of sleep, but the sunlight wouldn't allow her to fall back into it. She yawned and sat up, rubbing her eyes. The android stood next to the bed.

"Good morning," Zaira signed to it. It gave no response. Not that it ever did. She liked it that way. When the young woman slipped out of the bed, something fell off of it, making a light pat noise as it landed on the ground.

"Huh?" Zaira picked it up. It was a dandelion. It's stem was half wilted, leaving the yellow head drooping pathetically and dirt fell from the base, as if it had been yanked out of the ground. Upon looking back at the bed, she found more of the dandelions scattered on the sheets.

She frowned and looked to the android, signing, "Did you do this?"

It gave a nod, silver hair falling around its face.

"That's disgusting. Please get these weeds cleared off and change the sheets. There is dirt all over them now," she signed, tossing the dandelion in her hand on the pile with the rest. "I'm going to get dressed and go out."

It gave another nod, watching as she left.

"I'm back," Zaira called out unnecessarily into the house, just to fill the void of silence. Somehow it made it feel like home. She wandered into the living room, where her android was usually waiting. Except it wasn't there this time.

Zaira set aside the plastic bag of hardware she had just bought and looked around the house for the mechanical being. The last place she expected to find it was in the kitchen.

"What on earth are you doing?" she asked, curiously peering around it. Something simmered on the stove, hidden by a lid over the pan. It smelled incredibly....strange.

The android looked at her and lifted the lid to show her. The smell nearly knocked the Italian out before she could see what was inside of it. She snatched the lid from its hand and slapped it back on the pan, moving away from it to avoid further gagging.

"Did you use that meat from the fridge?" she asked, signing.

The android nodded.

"That was rotten! You can't use that!" She mentally cursed herself for not throwing it out before hand, but she was the only one who cooked. Then again....whywasthe android cooking?

"You've been acting very strange lately," Zaira commented, watching thoughtfully as her companion disposed of the meal.

As evening set, the young woman hummed to herself as she tinkered with her motorcycle. She had replaced and upgraded just about everything on it, but there was no doubting that it was still a 1990 Suzuki Katana. If anyone had seen the careful way she worked on it, they would know instantly that she loved the machine dearly.

Zaira jumped, dropping her wrench from the startling loud music. It hadn't even made a sound when it hit the floor due to the music being way too loud. It was nearly painful.

She frantically covered her ears, searching for the source. The android held a hand out to her. The Italian gave it a confused look before smacking its hand out of the way and dashing to the player, ripping the cord out of the wall.

"What is wrong with you?" she shouted, more from not being able to hear herself than anger.

Zaira looked over the robot with concern. Perhaps she had done more damage than she thought last night....

"Sit down. I'm going to run a diagnostics on you."

Soon, she had the android powered down and attached to a computer. However, when the tests she ran came back, everything was running fine. She was truly stumped.

"If it wasn't the screwdriver then why are you acting so strangely? I'll have to check your memory. Maybe I'm missing something."

Zaira scanned through the codes upon codes encrypted in the android's memory bank. Something interesting caught her eye.

"Chatrooms? What could you possibly have to chat about online?" she asked, frowning slightly. The chat was in Japanese, and she couldn't read it. She sighed and ran it through a translator program. A few minutes later she was able to read it in horribly constructed Italian.

<<16000385: I require help making Zaira happy. Please inform me of the best course of action to do so.>>

[[Huy: Zaira? Is that a girl?]]
<<16000385: Affirmative.>>
[[Huy: What a weird name. Sounds hot! xD ]]
<<16000385: ? >>

((Kibana HAS LOGGED IN))

((Kibana: What's going on?))
[[Huy: 16 wants to impress a girl.]]
((Kibana: Oh cool. We can probably help with that.))
((Kibana: But first you have to tell us why.))
[[Huy: Yeah!! Let us know that your intentions are true! xD ]]

Zaira frowned at the chat. These people were idiots. She read on.

<<16000385: My existence is to make Zaira happy. However, she never shows any signs of happiness. I want her to be happy no matter what.>>

The young woman's eyes widened slightly. Where did the android get that idea? As she read through the chats, she couldn't help but feel moved by the machine's actions, even if they were horribly executed. Tears rimmed her eyes and she looked to its expressionless face.

"Thank you for trying," she whispered softly to it. Zaira reached out and brushed her fingers down its cheek. "But I can't allow you to do that."

She deleted the chats from the android's memory, and sifted through its programming until she was sure the code that made its goal based around her happiness was deleted.

Zaira set the laptop aside, letting the changes to the android save and load. She stood up to leave, but couldn't force herself to go just yet. She observed the humanoid machine carefully, and hesitantly bent down, placing a gentle kiss on its forehead.

"It's not your job to make me happy, you know," she smirked. "It's your job to just be there."

Oh, that was beautiful! The idea behind this piece was great. I loved it. A lot of restrained emotion...unspoken was great! I love sci-fi fiction. Hope you'll be writing more =^-^=
