A Trick Knee With A Sense Of humor

Updated on December 8, 2015

What A Good Surprise

I wake up with a thousand thoughts racing through my head

Here I go again

Trying to put my life in perspective

Sharing the moment

Bringing my dreams out in the open

I hear a loud hacking and coughing

It's my wife

She caught a cold

What perfect timing

Right before the holidays

The doctor says it's not bronchitis and phneumonia

That's wonderful news

What is it then ?

She has had it for over a week

The common cold

His recommendation Benzonatate capsules three times a day to suppress the tickle

Robotussin DM every four hours

It sounds awful

Early in the morning and sometimes late at night

I can't block my ears fast enough

The echoing in the hallway of gut wrenching and choking

It sends a shrill up and down my spine

Clearing her throat

The deep sound of her blowing her nose

An overflowing pile of tissues in a small waste basket

I cringe and shake

How can anything I do

Compare to feeling down and out

Not up to speed

Her raspy, heavy breathing

I force out those unhappy thoughts and push to write

Tossing around a few ideas for a poem

Nothing is striking my fancy

So I put it down and do some chores

Washing the dishes and making my bed clears my mind

A kind of home therapy

Back to writing which I love

A few more lines but nothing I can sink my teeth into

Then I get dressed and tackle part of a home project

That to is not going as planned

Looking over at my wife

Sound asleep in a chair

The t.v. on

Unconscious and exhausted

Her chest has to be aching

Her hand resting beside a purple glass

I gave her some cranberry juice earlier to pump up the vitamin c

Half a glass later

So as quickly as thoughts come

They fly away

They to are scared of the odd noises coming from the lifeless body

I have lost my concentration and focus

Drawing a blank

I figure today is not a day to write after all

Some days as much as we want to

It just doesn't happen

It has to be free flowing and natural

So with an imaginary obstacle in my way

I will continue on with my day

Then a really strange thing happened

I took a step

My knee folded and buckled

I'm in instant pain

I never had knee injuries growing up

So this is scary

I couldn't move

No pressure on my leg whatsoever

I thought what am going to do now ?

What's the problem ?

Sruggling to step and stretch

Then five minutes later

My knee is fine

Wow what a scare

I can't explain it

Then I realized it was my body telling me to lighten up

Things will happen in their own time

Not when you want

Be patient and kind

Love life and you will find happiness

Don't be surprised

If it finds you first and it takes you for a ride

Jodah If she lays down in a chair she doesn't cough as much. Luckily we have a big cushy one. I tell her this. It makes us appreciate all our healthy days we don't think twice. I love the idea of the Dead Leg Poets Society. I think you would make a great president. I am happy to be a member and can't wait for the president to announce his Put your left in and shake it all about speech. Maybe our legs will surprise us with their own Lean on Me song. Thank you for everything. Dream Big.

Gypsy Rose Lee My wife is hanging in there. Hoping the cough will stop. I am real surprised I haven't got it. With all the good wishes her mind is telling her body enough is enough. After hearing what you go through I wish there's was away to help. Our prayers are with you and in no time it would be great to see you have many more good days over bad. Thank you for reading and sharing. I appreciate it so much. May you have the most beautiful dreams.

Sorry that your wife has taken a turn for the worse. I seem ok now, though my cough seems to come on at night when I lie down. I haven't been to the doctor because I have had it before and it usually clears in a week or two.

Yes, it'll be funny if we both have our knees go out at the same time. I'll let you know if it happens again. Maybe we can start a group "The Dead Leg Poet's Society" or something.

Jodah Well my wife had a bad day today coughing on and off every hour. I think she has taken for the worse. I don't get it. The doctors says it can take two weeks to go away. She has only been on medicine for one week. We will give it more time. I feel so bad. There is nothing I can do to help her. I am so sorry to hear you were sick. Are you better. What did the doctor say you had and what did you get for medicine? Let me know next time your knee kicks in ? I will do the same. We can turn something bad into something funny. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Hope this finds your wife recuperating and feeling much better. I have a trick knee that has been sprained and has had water on it and even has been operated on. Of course this knee has never forgiven me so there are times when I am heading down the stairs and it gives a sharp pain and no support for some moments. What I do is I strap an elastic band around it and keep it strapped for about a week. Usually after that the knee goes back to normal. Then my sciatica kicks in. I tell you there are days that I prefer just to sit at the PC and not do too much moving about. Hope you and yours can look forward to a Merry Christmas.

Hi Dream On, it is difficult to concentrate on writing when a family member, especially your spouse is ill. I have had a cough on and off for the last couple of weeks myself. A tickle in the throat and phlegm on the chest that sometimes causes a coughing fit and wakes my wife if she is sleeping. It seems to have improved today.

I have also experienced in the past what you describe with your knee. I have stood up and found it painful and had trouble walking for a few minutes...then suddenly it is fine. Seems to happen for no reason. Perhaps you are right and it is just your body's way of making you slow down and relax. Good hub and glad to hear your wife is improving.

Shanmarie I love to hear your good news. My wife is getting better. The coughing starts in the morning or late at night. All day long she is good. The medicine is doing the trick. Thank you for caring.

Shanmarie At different times we all take life too serious and it causes unnecessary stress and worry. Enjoying my day and I hope yours is exceptional. Thank you for reading and sharing.

Really like the ending four lines of this poem! We all need to lighten up sometimes.
