A man of the sea verse

Updated on August 25, 2013

He tacks carefully down into the wind ever so slightly
a steady sea over fairly calm seas
The mast looms at an angle as steadily slanted
as the horizon
The briny harbor waters split
in two around the wooden
hull and become two seas
both moving away
from the stern

He secretly loves to maneuver out of the harbor
without power
just to see the looks on the tourists faces
as his ship passes quietly around
the many hulls and buoys
Not a sound
not a problem
The pungent odor of the tidal flats
lift his spirits even higher

But as he passes out beyond the jetty
laying steadily to port
he knows one thing
He is in his element
One man one boat and
one sea
There is no finer

And hours later a sailor glides
silently into port
in the dusk of a long
sea day
Where no one waits and watches
a fresh sunburn
perspiring over his brow
He knows one thing and
one thing alone
The sea owns the man

Yet as the lights come on one by
one in the boat hulls and on the piers
on the silent house porches
where life calms itself
into the night
The masts of the waiting boats jingle their
hardware in the rocking
and sea foam swirls
around the piers
One more sea day offers itself
up to humanity

How I wish I had even a tiny speck of your tremendous talent for writing poetry. I'm sending this out to my family and friends in addition to the regular sharing.

Sometimes I believe you are in a supreme class of your own. ~ Hugs ~ Audrey

The sea indeed is an enchanting place. Full of deep sea mysteries and wonders, to live on or near the sea must be beautiful and sometimes adventurous.

Touching all the senses. You captured the sensations perfectly and held them in words.

      Eddy Bear,

I think of you and have an image of a man walking down a beaten, dusty trail. Calloused hands and well worn boots. A man whose eyes tell a deep, story of a long and interesting existence. I like that man... but this beautiful, tender flow of emotions makes you such a rare kind. I love this and everything you stand for.

Wow! What a well-done verse! I can relate to this, for the sea runs in my blood due to my maternal heritage.

Of all the poems I have read, this one ranks up there with my all time favorite, "Sea Fever" by John Masefield.

Voted up awesome and beautiful as well as shared.
