POETRY. Just Do It.

Poetry is a way of expressing yourself just like any other, but it allows you to complicate your words the same way what you are feeling is complicated. You can incorporate what the speaker is saying into the form of the poem.

Superstitions

Superstitions

This is a world filled with superstitions,

but was anyone ever killed with superstitions?

A man confined to bed, refusing to leave.

With what was he ailed? Superstitions.

Asked to believe what cannot be seen,

yet this is not thought to build superstitions?

A ladder, a mirror, a small black cat, all can

make a grown man shudder, being skilled with superstitions.

To be trapped in a mirror-maze, breaking

straight through, thrilled by superstitions.

Find a clover, make sure there are four.

A happy mutation swilled with superstitions.

Spot a penny; pray for heads up.

Snatch a head, leave a tail, spoiled by superstitions.

What makes a hero? Is it Apollo's

laurel crown, instilled with superstitions?

Loss of a Brother

I woke up. My world tumbled down.

Red and blue flashed like a disco party

outside my window. I thought it was

all a bad dream. So many times before you survived

as the red and blue flashed like a disco party.

I closed my eyes tight, hiding fears and pretending

it was all a bad dream. So many times before you survived,

but like an hour glass your sand dissipated.

I closed my eyes tight, hiding fears and pretending

none of this was real. It all played out like a B-rated film,

and like an hour glass your sand dissipated

floating away into the abyss.

None of this was real. It all played out like a B-rated film,

They said there was a needle in your arm, and fire in your veins.

It sent you floating away into the abyss.

Never to be heard from again, your lifeless body like ice.

They said there was a needle in your arm, and fire in your veins.

There was a weakness in you no one saw, shattered like glass,

never to be heard from again, your lifeless body like ice.

It seemed like nothing more than a dream, something that could never be.

There was a weakness in you no one saw, shattered like glass,

And outside my window I thought it was

nothing more than a dream, something that could never be.

I woke up. My world tumbled down.

Found fate, a found poem

For my unconquerable soul

I hold with those who favor fire.

My little horse must think it queer

A creature of heroic blood,

To say that for destruction ice

That was built in such a logical way

Not from the grand old masters,

Black as pit from pole to pole

Through the corridors of time.

I am fevered with the sunset,

For the wander-thirst is on me

With her topsails shot with fires,

The harpies of the shore shall pluck

Upon his brow he left his breath,

In confidence may bind

Shall sweep the clouds no more!

If you are only kind

If you can wait and not be tired of waiting

If you can meet with triumph and disaster

The woods are lovely dark and deep

My head is bloody but unbowed

As if he said “I’m not afraid

I am the master of my fate

In still, yet brave, despair;

And the captain of my soul.

To make this poem I literally went through a book of poetry and picked out the lines I liked the best, I then put them in an order that made some sense. After that I realized that the stanzas weren’t all related, but they had a general theme of fate, so I made the stanzas separate because it reminded me of the poem I wrote called “superstitions.” The name I found to be amusing because it’s a found poem, so I named it found fate, it’s about fate and it’s a found poem.

Waves

We watched as the water crashed upon the shore

Saw the felting life of the many waves

And wondered if this was it, or if there was something more.

The heat of the day struck us to the core

The sun was shining, giving the sand what it so craves.

We watched the water crash upon the shore

How we wanted to join the sea, so far away as if apart of lore.

Forced to waste away upon the land, feeling like sand slaves,

And wondering if this was it, or if there was something more.

Heat was making the day such a snore

So we made a game. To go to the water which one of us braves?

We watched as the water crashed upon the shore

We raced to the water, what we saw was full of gore.

For those many fish, there were many graves

And we wondered if this was it, or if there was something more.

This was not what we expected nor

What was desired, is this what happens when one misbehaves?

We watched as the water crashed upon the shore

And wondered if this was it, or if there was something more.

Ode to the Moon

You shine like a flashlight in the night sky,

bestowing light while the sun sleeps.

You were once a quarter, and now you are a dime.

When in full bloom you are the sign of romance.

When you are absent the stars twinkle brighter,

as if to sing their lament for lack of you.

You are responsible for the tides, and

though you are being pulled away,

we know you still try your best

to shine like a beacon of hope

reminding us that there is something looking down.

Striving to create a path through the

stormy weather

Upon the dark abyss of the sea,

pulling our consciousness back with

your line. The road that the mirror reflects

creates a path that leads to the unknown.

Ever showing, ever leading, ever watching.

The roads we travel, together and alone.

Wedding Epithalamia

On this day…

We are gathered here today

to lighten the burdens of these two people.

When one set of arms gets tired of holding up the celling

the other set will rise to meet it. These two people

will be forever working together to keep their worlds from crashing down

and in the presence of these witnesses,

he in his black and white, mates for life. Only seeing

the beauty of this woman, so gracefully clad in snow flakes.

On this day these two people take off on a trip into uncharted waters,

only succeeding if they are working together,

Which is commended to be an honorable thing among all men.

They will never again worry about sleeping alone, for they will

always have a soul near by that will want to make them smile.

Therefore is not by any to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly,

they must BOTH admittedly put the others needs and feelings

before their own. Both must care for the other as if they where their world,

or else hollowness will creep into their life. These two luckily fit together like two

puzzle pieces making what is work for the rest of us look so effortless.

They reverently, discreetly, advisedly and solemnly enter into this holy estate

knowing full well the risks and the benefits. Knowing that they are both taking

another’s life in their own hands, they will have to be diligent soldiers in order to

keep this life from being destroyed by their many enemies.

For they will have many foes money, sex, friends, time, children,

all causing them to doubt. But they know that

regardless of these soon to come obstacles, they can still do this, combine lives.

And so these two persons present now come to be joined.

Today, by witness of you, to show that against all odds they can do this.

They can fight against the norms of society and launch into space,

knowing the stars will make room for two people so faithfully committed

to creating a new level of happiness. Now…

If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.

Little Black Cat.

There once was a Halloween cat

who felt that fun

was best achieved alone.

The way he saw

it the world was a mean

place with no love to be found.

What is really found

is a sad, lonely cat

who doesn’t know what it could mean

to have a friend. The fun

the cat could have if he only saw

that always being alone

would be murdering your happiness. So alone

he stood until he was found

by a kind stranger, this stranger took a saw

to the loneliness, destroying the fortress the cat

created around himself. The fun

that ensued surprised the cat. He didn’t mean

to block out the world, it wasn’t all mean.

the new happiness ninja made the cat realize how alone

he used to be. The cat had more fun

now than ever, and he eventually found

that he didn’t always have to be a clam to be a safe cat.

The hard outer shell as he soon saw

prevented not just the bad but the good as well. If that lucky saw

of the fearless stranger had not come to let the mean

people in, the tiny Halloween cat

would still be all alone;

but hey, Never fear he was found

and shown a new type of fun.

This dangerous style of fun

involved others. It was a sea-saw

of emotions and he soon found

that when you have a friend it doesn’t mean

you always have to be together but your never really alone.

Soon the cowardly lion began to see that he was in fact a very lucky cat.

Though his life was not just fun, that didn’t mean

that what he saw was bad. It gave him pause but he did not retreat alone.

This time he finally found a friend, and was a complete cat.

Divorce

The dream was over before it began

Walls caved in, roof torn off, just as if lies

Were a cyclone. If I guessed I would have ran

Away. Tortured, helpless as our life dies.

A foundation infested with deceit,

Gnawing away at the frame, I watch

As the wood crumbles. To admit defeat

Seems only fair. Yet the hell I catch

For deciding to condemn our lost life

Makes it seem as though I’m the one who lied.

You think somehow I should still be your wife

Never really getting why our love died.

Now not even the broken frame remains

To stay right there would have just been insane.

During writing this poem I remembered that sonnets were originally love poems, and the fist one I had ever written was also a love poem. I happened to marry the person I wrote it for and it ended in divorce (hence the name). I honestly found personal amusement it writing another poem about the same person but on the opposite side. The metaphor I decided to use (a decaying house) was based on the assumption that a house is made a home because of the people in it, and a dying relationship destroys that home.
