Why we have Imaginary Friends

A poetry challenge was declared by Linda Bilyeu, Laurinzo Scott and Daisy Mariposa to write a poem on an imaginary friend.

Like other friendships in our lives, friendships with imaginary companions are important as a sources of motivation, comfort and support. Imaginary friendship is not just a childish concept. As adults, we turn to them for solace when our physical, spiritual and emotional thresholds are stretched.

I thought of three personified, imaginary but important friends to me. They are Peace, Wealth (in all forms) and Happiness.

Peace in our hearts sets the tone for other good things in our lives. It is the emotional comfort that we need for survival.

Wealth is an imaginary friend who appears in all forms. Spiritual well-being and the stability of our relationships are forms of wealth.

Our good friend happiness appears naturally when Peace and Wealth show up. I give them a poetic tribute in the form of an etheree.

What is an etheree?

An etheree is a ten-line unrhymed poem, the writing of which calls for the gradual build up of syllables with each line. The first line has one syllable, the next two, and it follows for ten lines. For more on different poetry forms, do refer to Daisy Mariposa’s well-explained hub on the subject. Do enjoy this little etheree on Peace, the many forms of Wealth and Happiness, three friends we should always treasure.

To Peace, Wealth and Happiness

Peace,
loved friend,
a beacon lit,
she restores our paths,
steadily scaffolds
us and our friend wealth,
who comes in many gracious forms,
both the true soul mates of happiness,
three fancied and essential friends for life.

Afterword

With peace comes an abundance of wealth in all forms and our eventual happiness. Three entities, above everything else, that we should love and treasure.
