A View and You
My favourite view... and you.
Sitting in my study, sipping coffee,
I gaze out at my favourite view,
Patiently awaiting your arrival.
Outside is like an Autumn landscape in oils,
Window frame for a mount.
But those low, brick walls that border the winding lane,
The mature trees and battered old gate
Are suitable subjects for painting all year round.
Soon you'll appear,
scolding me softly for leaving the gate open.
But I left it open for you!
As you approach, the view will spring to life
And begin to take on a different meaning.
You'll swagger down the lane in that long, shabby coat
You've had since the year dot,
Smiling that unique smile of yours
Which tells me you're happy with the world,
And only then will the transformation be complete.
Look! The landscape has become a living portrait,
Adopting a whole new essence.
I can almost see the wind tugging at your hair
As you gently sweep it to one side.
The gate swings wearily on its hinges behind you
And freshly fallen leaves crunch beneath your feet,
A golden carpet leading you up to the front door.
You notice me watching, cut across the lawn
And come up to lightly tap on the window instead.
I think of grabbing my camera,
So the moment is never lost.
My favourite view and you.
