Absence of Oxygen, Presence of Flame

Updated on October 24, 2011

I crawl from the valley

of the shadow of death
into the sky, arise,

I take my first breath,
but surely, smoke corrupts,
polluting the lungs,
upsetting the balance,
my lovely dream disrupts,
it shatters,
it scatters,
it spreads to the breeze,
blowing about,
grazing the peaks,
skimming the oceans,
searing the seas

Iconic statues,
consisting of gold,
and misplaced faith,
they rest atop a lonely hill,
a forgotten sacred place,
in molten pools of youth
come and washed away,
deities interchanged,
and shattered concepts of truth,
that clashed like night and day

When human nature overshadows delusions of love,
we have a choice to face,
to chase fantasies or accept reality.

Reality is a term that cannot be defined,
and acceptance of such is hard to come by,
but surely, all you with broken hearts have seen,
the sadistic continuance of this fucking routine...

The words "I love you" should require a license,
after rigorous testing to weed out the cons
Fraudulent applicants should surely be punished
for their willingness to speak such deceptions

Conditions, conditions, goddamned conditions,
always convincing the broken that they can love again

Ben, this is such a delightful piece! I mean, there is a deep serious stuff here and there is an insightful, emotional message but I love how you 'played' with the words, it felt so provocatively intense. So clever of you!

To love without condition is a reality rarely inhabited.;)

I too believe that we can love again Ben. I have had my heart shattered into tiny pieces...more than once. I have lived to love again and will never give up on love.

In the flames that choke the life and love out of me seeking not its own, but to feel the dying touch stripping my life away. Well that is what I felt. Up and beautiful Ben.

The first part made me think that you were writing from a flames perceptive...

the last part, I agree, people should be tested and liscenced for a lot of things...having kids, having sex, saying I love you. too many people take these things for granted, lie, cheat, deny their responsibilities, and dont take the blame for their actions. but just because youre broken and just because a lot of people are like that doesnt mean that things cant be fixed or that you cant find someone who isnt like that. and you can always find it in your heart to love. theres no conditions only feeling, and yes sometimes you have to chase a few fantasies before the fantasy becomes real, but once its real, everything before seems less important, it was just life lessons, and learning that got you to where you are.
