Absorption of Horror

Updated on October 1, 2015

He knew for sure

And there was melancholy

In his posture,

Fear was like a visual

Coming into brutal focus,

The air was thick,

The fog dense,

His body tired, tense,

Lack of sleep,

There was absorption of horror

That ran deep,

He stiffened and fell silent,

Quiet was a dangerous choice,

One that he would voice,

His lower lip would quiver,

As he was trying to beat down a shiver,

Love was the next thing he heard,

Ringing in his air,

A beautiful word,

It was a beautiful sensation,

So much magic in that word,

But sadly, he would fear,

That love is a word he

Would never hear,

Suddenly bombs bursting in air,

Blood splattered from here to there,

War planes flying high,

Smoke and torment filled the sky,

Soldiers around him

Scrambling for balance,

Flesh would pop,

Death came with cold efficiency,

The ground held the blood on top,

And the war seemed endless,

It just wouldn’t stop.

you took us to war and fed us its pangs. War is fear; it comes with death. Those who live to tell the story shudder in their sleep of monsters in different shapes and postures personifying death. You described war so finely here.

You capture your audience with simple words, yet truly effective and meaningful. I could smell the death, destruction, the planes roaring overhead, the bombs dropping, the bodies stacking. You never fail to deliver with your Horror of Absorption. Well done Frank, nice to grace your pages again. You are a brilliant and talented writer. Bravo.

      Frank,

war is a terrible human reality. Even after witnessing horror of a war, humans raise another war.

It's always a trip with you Frank as I never miss an opportunity to tell everybody that you're one of my favorite writers. You always have titles to die for - I think titles are so important anyway.

I love the narrative tension in your work. I always have.

It reminds me of the narrative tension in my love life , lol, or the obvious lack of it, lol.

Gripping and descriptive. You made the world of your poetry real and then placed us right in the middle of it.

      Emotional and powerful. Excellent work.

      Dear Frank, wow, indeed!

I really love your dramatic poetry here, as it truly packs a punch. I especially love the bittersweet part about love that you have so wonderfully woven into this piece here... very haunting.

Your writing truly does take one right into the scene as if being there and feeling the same emotions and the vivid smells, sights and sounds, which is a sign of one awesome writer, YOU! Of course, we already knew such : )

Sorry I have been MIA, as life has a way of making us come to a screeching halt in things.. with one of my granddaughter's having surgery and hubby too on the same day. One planned and one accident. All will be okay though.

Just had to make sure I remain a faithful reader of your wonderful work.

Voted up ++++ and sharing of course!

      Bless you, Faith Reaper

Beautiful, Frank. War is so sad and we often see it spoken of in terms of courage and heroism, which is all there, but so is the fear, the aloneness and the sadness of life ending too soon. You have artfully captured the essence. Wonderfully done.

      Take care.

How amazing to write such a poem about facing death on the battlefield! Though we don't know it until well into the poem. You are a true story teller Frank bringing us into your poetic world ... we can't stop ourselves from reading and absorbing every word!

Voted up, awesome, beautiful, and interesting. Oh, and shared.
