Advocacy/Activism 41st Good word

I never thought of these words as good words. And then I realize, it is my thinking that is changing and I need to take in the full meaning of these two words.

The meaning of Advocacy/Activism

I thought I knew what these words meant. I thought both words were political and Advocacy, meant lobbing and Activism meant yelling, screaming and marching.

Now, I am finding new meanings for these two words that we say.

Advocacy means: Support, Encouragement, Backing, Sponsorship, Promotion, Activism

Activism means: Involvement Engagement, Crusading, Politicking, Do-gooding, Direct action, Political action, Social action.

Advocate for you and me

Joanna Grace Goldsmith is an Independent Advocate, she advocates for the support of all the writers here on HP, not just her friends. She stands up for us to help us realize our dreams and aspirations and builds our confidence.

Jo/Grace encourages us to be more than we can be.

Advocacy/Activism

© Shyron Shenko

If advocacy is not for Peace

Wars will never cease

If our advocacy is not for truth

The truth will not be told

When I thought of the word advocacy

I always thought of it politically

Activism as marching, screaming and yelling

Also politically

Now I am learning new meanings

For old words

I have learned that advocacy

Is standing up for what is right

And activism is to guard that right

Even if you have to fight

Advocacy

Advocacy for learning from Adversity

Advocacy and Activism

Do you know what these two words mean?

Seems like we all need to advocate for the election of someone new to replace Moscow Mitch McConnell since we can't vote him out. The people of Kentucky must do that, and I've read they aren't happy with him, so maybe they will vote him out.

Gun regulation is sitting on McConnell's desk since February when the House passed it, and he refuses to even allow it to have a vote in the Senate. He's controlling our government right now for the most part and only the people of Kentucky have voted for him. I don't think someone who is only accountable to a few people in one state should have so much power over the entire country.

Until we have tougher background checks and stronger regulations on war weapons, mass shootings are likely to happen often. Of course Trump encourages white supremacy and their craziness with his rhetoric, too. He needs to stop it and be held responsible for the terrible things he's promoting by using his horrible language that encourages racism and violence against people who are not white or Christian or straight.

Blessings dear friend. Hope all is well with you.

I hear a lot of people saying, "There's nothing I can do about it," and "it doesn't effect me, so I don't care," and all manner of reasons for allowing ugliness in their name (they don't seem to realize it reflects on them when they turn their head to avoid involvement.

Since we the people ARE the government, we the people are responsible for allowing corruption and wrong doing, and for not doing what we can to change or end it. Even if all we can do is object strongly when anyone will listen, then that is what we need to do.

Actively working for change where change is needed is one of our responsibilities as citizens of this country where in fact we ARE the government.

Posting this on AH and FB. Blessings dear friend . . .

Yes it is sickening that people who abuse others are condoned for doing so, but look who is doing the condoning, the fox in the hen house condoning the egg sucking hound dog. Rachel is correct.

      Blessings and hugs dear friend.

Advocates for a lot things are now needed more than ever. Not just for the poor and/or homeless, but for the environment, for health insurance for everyone, and for senior (elders) rights.

Several months ago Trump took away the right of nursing home and assisted living residents to sue when they are physically or mentally abused or raped, or abused in any way. They can leave the place if they can find another one to take them (not likely any better), but they can do nothing to those attendants or administrators who harm them. Is that sickening or what?

As Rachel Maddow has said, it's not a matter of Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals, but a matter of who cares and who does not care. While they're still not the majority, there are an awful lot of people who only care about themselves. Not hard to figure out who they are either . . .

Hope all is well with you. Always know how much I appreciate all that you do. Take care . . .

Au fait, thank you for the comments, I do appreciate you. Yes I know that you advocate for the poor and homeless.

I just saw Ken Starr, you know the man who tried to coerce Susan McDougall to lie about President Clinton and when she would not he had her imprisoned and a couple of weeks ago he spoke up for Robert Muller and the FBI, then tonight he said the opposite that Mr. Muller should step down and drop the Russia investigation (wonder how much trump paid him) when he himself lost his job as President of Baylor University for covering up sexual abuse in 2016. I guess birds of a feather really do stick together.

I know what you are talking about with everything going up and up, just picked up my car from the mechanic $500.89 repair bill and $300.00 last week because RATS got on top of the engine and ate a hose. Social Security cost of living raise went right back to cover the cost of Medicare insurance….Social Security did not increase 1¢.

The tax bill will affect home owner in 2018, it is in the bill that tax payers can’t take the home owner tax on the interest that we paid last year.

As you know ACA (i.e. Obama Care) was crammed into the tax bill that was just passed.

I pray that things are going better for you and that you had a Blessed Christmas.

Take care my dear friend. I tried to call you a couple days ago, but you did not answer.

As you know, I have advocated for poor and/or homeless people for many years. The number of homeless people in this country has increased since Trump took office. Given his most recent accomplishment, passing a tax revamp that will take even more from people of modest means and give it to the wealthy, homelessness is likely to increase even more.

As I have written in some of my articles, 46% of homeless people have jobs, many full time jobs. While expenses for everything from gas for the car, housing, and food have risen many times over the past 23 years, the minimum wage has not risen so much as a half-penny, much less a full penny.

The rise in housing over the past couple of years has pretty well made it impossible for many poor people (minimum wage workers, SS recipients, etc.) to obtain housing unless they have 20 roommates -- usually against city ordinance.

The recent tax bill will kick in, in about 4 years from now for people of modest means and poor people. They will be lulled in the meantime, with a slight tax cut, so that lots of Republicans can be elected to office before anyone realizes what really happened. 4 years from now is when homelessness may get a lot closer than just one paycheck away (as it is for many people now).

To prepare, people who are able should pay off as many bills as they can, and try to pay off a car so when the reality of this tax bill hits, they won't be taken by surprise. Homeless people with vehicles in good repair are way better off than homeless people on foot.

A vehicle provides a place to keep a few belongings, and a place to get in out of the weather with locks on the doors. A place to sleep that is fairly safe with far more privacy or safety than a shelter than is often full to overflowing. Having a vehicle for protection and transportation beats the heck out of being on foot, sleeping under bridges or on the ground behind some bushes. Way better than having to walk everywhere carrying whatever they can manage on their backs in whatever weather is happening.

For sure the homeless situation is going to get worse before it gets better. In fact it gets worse everyday as heartless people, and the equally heartless people they elect to office, take away more and more public assistance programs (or gut them), and taxes go up for the modest and poor while wages continue to stagnate.

Advocacy for the poor and homeless is so important if only because many of today's smug, who hate homeless people, will likely find themselves among their ranks before it's over. It's important to advocate Before one becomes homeless themselves because once that happens, no one cares about anything a homeless person has to say about anything. Once someone becomes a human rat or cockroach, as so many non-homeless, non-poor people imagine homeless people to be, they no longer have the power to change anything. No one will hire a homeless person. Everyone just wants them to go away by any means. Even death is acceptable so long as they just go away.

Jesus was homeless all of His adult life . . .

Hugs and blessings to you and John. Wishing you both a peaceful, joyous Christmas.

It's always good for a person to stand up for what s/he believes and thinks is right. Not always necessary to march or protest. When the subject comes up just don't be afraid to speak your mind on it in a normal voice. Write on it here, on FB, and anywhere else the opportunity presents itself.

And be sure to vote when voting is required. Maybe if more people who were so sure Hillary was going to win would have showed up to vote our country wouldn't be is such a terrible situation. Eventually it's going to start affecting all of us. Dirty toxic drinking water. LA and Dallas will both disappear under a huge cloud of smog so breathing may be an issue. More toxins in our food and that will effect children even more than adults, and also unborn children. But the majority party thinks science is 'fake' and cares nothing about anyone or anything except themselves. Thing is, where EPA and Energy and things like that are concerned, they're at least going to be killing themselves and sickening themselves too, if that's any consolation. They will have to breath the filthy air and drink the filthy water and eat the toxic chemicals in food along with the rest of us. The insecticides/pesticides and herbicides that were once banned are now legal again.

The minority has done this to us all because the majority didn't think it was necessary to show up at the polls. Often the majority lacks the backbone to speak up and hold their ground.

I know the current majority party seems huge right now, but that's because they have the loudest mouths and every one of them is screaming, so that just 10 of them sound like a hundred.

We have to replace the majority party in the congress next opportunity, just 18 months from now, or we're going to make Mr. Hawking's prediction come true much sooner than 100 years from now.

I'm glad to see those who can marching and demonstrating for what is right, but not everyone can do that, but everyone can do something -- and that is what they need to be doing.

Who would have thought the Dark Ages would return in these modern times? And it will get worse unless those people who disagree speak up at every opportunity and show up to vote.

Hope all is well with you and John and Chipper. Take care dear friend . . .

Hello Sis, I am so happy to see you, thank you for sharing this again. I have been keeping up with it in the news and reading stories from many papers and I watch Rachel almost every day. I too plan on watching the Town Hall meeting, I hope you saw Michael Moore, (Fahrenheit 911 fame, I hope you saw this documentary) he is a Flint native and he is furious. President Obama is giving 8 Billion dollars to Flint to clean-up by replacing the lead pipes in that city, Michael asked the mayor what he is going to do with the money, the mayor told Michael Moor that he is going to assess the alternatives. One would think that the mayor would use the money to replace the lead pipes. As Rachel asked, wonder what the town hall folks are drinking?

Blessings and Hugs right back to you.

P.S. I Will be gone most of the day today.

I am sure you heard about the Flint Michigan water crisis. My attention has been steered away to get a petition together for all to sign to have the Gov of Mich charged and arrested for the Lead poisoning of 9 thousand children, 100 thousand people, and thousands of animals!

Rachel Maddow is holding a Town Hall Meeting in Flint Michigan tomorrow night @ 9 pm. Right on MSNBC. I am going to watch. The good people of Michigan need Advocacy from all over the globe!

Shyron.....In Au Fait's comment, she has mentioned something profound that I have mulled over so often....(you & she can ignite our thoughts so well)

When we stop & THINK about the enormous, phenomenal WEALTH that collects under the feet of the thousands of big celebrities, (Gere, etal) can you just imagine if they ALL pooled a smidgeon of their individual billions and each bought complete towns (2 or 3) in each of our 50 states? With their massive wealth, they could transform these towns in whatever ways necessary, to house all "homeless" & those in poverty. They could re-fortify buildings for businesses & factories to provide JOBS. Make these towns expressly for such down-trodden Americans to lift them from the depths of their hellish existence.

Does that sound ridiculous? It's really not. It is not as far-fetched as some might scoff.

It is possible however improbable. It boggles the mind how the many many muti-millionaires & billionares in our Nation cannot and do not justify a massive mission to save thousands of those who have little or nothing. Not GIVING.....but "providing opportunity, jobs, better schools, neighborhoods, self-respect." NOT A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM! Individuals....doing for their fellow man and ultimately for the betterment of our whole country, to give others a boost and a starting point. (Like your picture of the kitties!)

Yes, I have these crazy dreams often.............I'm often told I think in "fantasies," but it's never stopped me.........Peace, Paula

Richard Gere spent a day on the streets of New York City as a homeless man and discovered how people love to look down on the poor. How people consider themselves better and love to disapprove of poverty and the people who must suffer it everyday, yet these people do nothing to alleviate poverty or homelessness. Mr. Gere has become an advocate for the poor and homeless even though just one day can't possibly give a complete picture of what it's like to be homeless.

But for the grace of God, anyone could find themselves homeless. Sharing this excellent poem again.

Hope you are having a great weekend and not working too hard. Blessings and hugs, dear friend . . .

Good word, great words, divinely inspired words. At first glimpse at the " Advocacy / Activism words , (on Hub publishing day) in my spirit I've heard following- hesitant to write until now "Comforter,Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, ADVOCATE..." Ah, that's where the "Childen's" mounting comes from... as well as " activism"= ' for the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power- making it ACTIVE, sharper then any two edged sword... ( The rest is famously known .) Sigh.

I've become an advocate for many causes in my senior years, Shyron. Even if I were the marching type (maybe back in the sixties, but not now), my body wouldn't allow me to do it, and if I screamed at all, I'd be hoarse for a week.

Instead, I use words in my attempts at advocacy--in articles, letters and emails to political representatives, newspapers, comments on blogs and anywhere online that allows me to add my "two cents' worth." I use words when talking to family, friends, and acquaintances--even strangers I meet in public with whom I have the chance to talk.

I never expected to be an activist in my sixties and seventies, but only wish I'd begun decades sooner. I'm thankful to have the power of words to help me--and glad to know kindred spirits on HP.

Yes indeed both are very good words. I like to advocate for the less fortunate, those people who don't often get a fair shake if ever. If everyone would just do the right thing the world would be a better place. Marching and screaming doesn't usually work so well and change always comes slowly.

I like that you've found new meaning for the words advocasy and activism. I too have found new meaning through you words. Loved your poem...

As a nurse I'm very familiar with the word advocasy/advocate, these are words used in our code of conduct, nurses must act as advocates for the patients in their care. Activism is another interesting word, that have been hijacked by politicians for their own ends. Great job, love the poem, wonderful image.
