Almost there together.

Updated on March 28, 2010

I have been to over fifty countries and traveling is my hubby, exploring new places and meeting new people, learning new cultures and languages. My exposure thought me that what the media portrays about so many places are all fallacies; believe me, the Africa i heard of is not the Africa i carry in my mind today.

Africa is blessed with vast wealth, more than Asia, Europe or America, i fell in love with Africa and it was in one of my trips that i met the love of my life. It was my sixth time of reconfirming my ticket on what suppose to be a four days trip, she was all smiles and her gentle approach turned me on. Accepting to have dinner with me that fateful day in central turned out to be a new dawn for me and Senegal.

We have been together ever since then and have traveled to so many places together, one thing i promised my wife is that i will spend eternity with her, “Together my love we will live and die”. “But not when the kids are still young”, she replied.

I took keen interest in this particular country, have never felt excited visiting a place like the excitement in my heart, the Caribbean Island is the only place missing in my list but the improvised state of this particular country as portrayed by the media made me hungry to visit it, being a mountainous country with tropical climate made it a hot tourist spot so it will be a pleasure visiting it in the company of my wife.

She was reluctant at the initial stage but later accepted to travel along with me. We landed at the Toussaint L’Oliverture international airport early in the morning and headed straight to hotel Montana, the roads and the environment immediately gave us a different clue about all we heard about this country and i must admit that i immediately fell in love with Haiti.

After a walk in the street, meeting bunch of friendly people with warm smiles on their faces and sort of baffled looks, probably seeing a well built white guy with a slim black lady was not common to them, we returned to our hotel room and decided to have a rest until the next day. I fell asleep and did not wake until the next morning; my wife told me that she didn’t want to wake me to watch the life band because she knew that i was exhausted.

We ordered one of their local cuisines and was right at the back of the pool when it all began, everywhere began to shake and before i could open my mouth, we were buried underneath the building, I don’t know how to explain this, i heard people shouting and groaning right from where i lay face down, there was a familiar voice..it said “O my God! Help me!.” It was my wife and she was trapped between rods and blocks.

There was no way i could pull her but glad i managed to turn and here i am facing my wife as we both lay trapped under rubles, i crawled a bit and was able to kiss her, there was a pure smile on her face then she began to cry, no help and the dust was too much, we were both suffocating. I don’t know how we passed the night but from all indications, it is now three days, the smell of blood and the debris of the building is now eating on us.

I could see touch lights and voices but my voice was so weak that my wife who laid helplessly closer could hardly hear me, from time to time, i managed to give her a kiss until my mouth got dry and i had no more saliva, all i know is that we will both die here though it seem painful but i was glad we will die together so i closed my weak eyes and prayed to God.

“Father, i know that it is your making but let it be the same time because it will break my heart the more to see my wife die before me since you have abandoned us.”

This i prayed to God but as faith may have it, the Dog smelled us and help got to us on the fourth day, we were pulled out from the rubles, it was at the hospital that i realized that it was an Earth quake but the most important thing is that neither me nor my wife sustained any physical injury. Eighty five corpse was recovered from the rubles.

Leaving Haiti was heart breaking but we had to leave due to the tension down home, thanks to the American marines who got us into a plane to Paris

but we are yet to recover from the trauma and the dreadful sights that have become our nightmares, the sight of corpse stacked heights.

Babies with crushed heads, people running halter skater in the street with blood all over them.

For those who dont have a heart
For those who dont have a heart

They would have found one in Haiti, if they have no love and compassion, they would be forced to bring them out.

My wife told me that she has learned about the fragility of life because we were almost there together.

In the memory of those who lost their lives.

This hub is a dedication to the people of Haiti and to all the Nations,Organizations and Individuals who in one way or the other helped during this ordeal,i wish to say thank you all for the response.

Tho the entire crew of the American Marine who worked tirelessly, risked their own lives while saving the victims of this tragedy,i wish to say BRAVO SIRS.

For the Survivors of this great disaster,

Take heart because there is a brighter day.

There comes a time When we head a certain call When the world must come together as one There are people dying

And it's time to lend a hand to life. The greatest gift of all
And it's time to lend a hand to life. The greatest gift of all

We can't go on Pretneding day by day That someone, somewhere will soon make a change

We are all a part of God's great big family And the truth, you know love is all we need
We are all a part of God's great big family And the truth, you know love is all we need

We are the world We are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving

There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me
There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me

Send them your heart

So they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out There seems no hope at all But if you just believe There's no way we can fall

Well, well, well, well, let us realize That a change will only come When we stand together as one
Well, well, well, well, let us realize That a change will only come When we stand together as one

We are the world We are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day

So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me
So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me
