Alone or Not

By Tony DeLorger © 2012

Alone in singularity,

alone in perceived reality,

abiding by the eventuality

of death in the sense of self.

Broad and shallow in concept,

this cycle of life a precept

passed down from those before us,

to temper all unknown.

As angels peer down longingly,

we squirming souls so wrongly

clawing for just redemption,

from earthly pain and strife.

Do ponder all that eventuates,

in life’s path that perpetuates,

the fear of not knowing,

what the afterlife will be.

Alone or not we proliferate,

the fears that ignorance exacerbates,

and clinging to one another take

our hopes with us to death.

Praying for eternity,

within our family determinedly,

to cling to all our certainty,

that life is beyond what’s known.

But in the end alone we are,

in life and death our dreams are marred,

by secrets held of grand design,

for us to fathom and at end to find.

I agree ImKarn; I'm the same. Spirituality is important in my life but religious dogma offers little. Thanks for reading and your comment. Take care.

beautiful poem, Tony - which is how i 'voted' (if that's the right word). I think it's that 'fear' you speak of that causes people to gather under the canopy of organized religion. I guess I'm just not scared enough, as I have never felt the need or the urge. I believe we are alone, ultimately, and that there are greater powers and a bigger picture. I just don't find them under aforementioned canopy.

A poem to make us ponder about life. Are we ever alone? I think that is a choice for each individual. Spiritually we are never alone is my experience. I do so enjoy reading this poem, Tony. It is one of those that makes me go deeper into my thoughts and search for the meaning of alone. Thank you.

      Hi Tony,

I loved your poem! It is scary to think that, ultimately we are alone and in our own little world and how we see it;or believe it to be. But your poem also makes me think that we aren't truly alone, we have our self. Sometimes the one person we forget about during our journey. Beautiful!
