A Tragic End to a Castle Love Affair

The mobile phone rings and I answer on the other side they inquire about the person who threw himself off the Falcon Castle to his death.

So, I cast my mind back and remembered the story that my mother-in-law told me.

He was in love with her and she with him, they met daily around the Falcon Castle and took walks to the top of the castle where they were alone and as free as falcons!

It had developed into a long standing relationship; unknown to her parents she sneaked out for the so-called walk exercise, the only reason to meet Ivan, the local soccer hero and comedian.

At first Ivan was quite surprised with his stroke of luck but later realized that Marija is really mad about him. They felt as strangers but eventually it developed into a true love affair. Each day new developments and feelings were going on. They really fell in love.

Marija was a virgin and so was Ivan, until the day it happened. Thereafter there was no stopping him and each day Marija was worried about her father finding out who was an ex Partisan army chief. One would never know his traits whether to accept it or not, kill or let it be.

The day dawned when they met again but something was amiss. They hugged each other and heard a rustle in the bushes; off-course Marija just had the only thought, her father!

To her surprise that was only a jackal, that missed its step in the bushes, how encouraging?

Ivan then proceeded as normal. The days went by and eventually, Marija fell pregnant, as worried and excited as she was, Ivan encouraged her daily, so that Marija forgets about all the cons in her life.

The Falcon Castle meeting with Ivan was the only thing on her mind. Six months went by and off course Marija's shape and size was showing off the truth. Not wanting her parents to find out she wrapped herself up so tightly with a waistband that it was unnoticeable.

The day came that she couldn't hide it anymore in which time Ivan was distancing himself from her more and more that now she did not know what to do. The only option was to tell her parents the truth.

She had sleepless nights the marks under her eyes were darkening, a secret she could no longer keep from her family, especially, and the father. Once the light seeped through the curtains it was time to get up.

As Marija tried to get out of bed in front of her stood her mother. A startling moment, but the guilt on Marija's face was glaring at her mother.

All went well with her that morning as she lay back in bed.

Another walk up to the castle, up the slightly steep road she felt a stretch in her tummy as she walked, the walk still felt well. Taking in the breath of fresh air was a lovely feeling in the countryside; to get away from it all was great idea for Marija.

Marija sat under her favorite tree and hoping Ivan would come by!

When she turned to get comfortable sitting there, he appeared right by her side. Trying to get up was difficult, Ivan gave her his hand and she gripped on to get up. His arms around felt so tightly wrapped around her waist, somehow she managed to loosen the grip. She looked at his face and smiled.

Ivan knew he had to face up to his responsibilities, he couldn't walk away now, though he had thought about leaving during the time he avoided meeting Marija. A woman, so special to him and the fact that they were in love he had to consider future plans, but her father wasn't going to be the easy one to put up with being, a Partisan and all.

Ivan's mind was relieved when he saw the mother of his child.

''Did I disturb you?'' He asked smiling.

''You under no circumstances had disturbed me, my love'' she said.

''Don't leave me again.'' she said softly.

''I haven't left you at all, I am trying to work out a plan for us, and so we can cope with our future plans.''

She made her way to him closer and laughed about the conversation thinking it won't work out for them.

Nobody wants to walk out on each other, life for them as changed but what they feel for each not everyone will understand.

Ivan kissed her lips with passion as a way of saying I am here and will not leave you no matter what. The embrace on her lips was tense and really made her feel good again.

''I am sorry Ivan'' Marija apologized.

She saw how amazing he was to her, his touch could take away all the hurt and sadness she was feeling, she had kept in her for all those days she hadn't seen him. Ivan is the only one that could make her feel all new again.

''How long will this affair last for?'' Marija said to herself.

He took her hands in his and gently rubbed his fingers over her smooth skin. ''I can't believe we are together and keeping your pregnancy a secret.'' Ivan said.

''What would happen if your dad came to know about us and your pregnancy?'' asked Ivan

''My dad will be outraged.'' said Marija gently.

''It seemed like we only met yesterday and look at us now,'' said Ivan.

He kissed her forehead and held her hands against his heart, the warm feeling of his body allowed her to get closer and closer. They talked and talked and didn't realize how fast time went by. It was already dark and Marija had to get home right away.

Sadly she had to go and Ivan didn't know when he would see Marija again.

Their plans for their future in raising their child together was not yet in emotion, Ivan seemed to have lots on his mind.

When Marija reached home out of breath her dad was waiting at the front door.

''Where have you been all day?''

Marija was afraid and lied.

''I went for a long walk with my friend and lost track of time.''

The Partisan Chief was not believing this little story from Marija he could see she was looking different.

Marija's mother knew but didn't ask a word.

After listening to her dad's harsh tone she went into her room.

Hopelessly Marija showered and talked to her mother about her pregnancy. It won't be an open and closed door; things have to be worked out between her and Ivan.

"What is he doing here?" questioned Marija's dad, as he saw the self-proclaimed ruggedly handsome football player. There was anger in his voice, the kind of anger Marija didn't hear for a long time.

''I am here to talk about Marija.'' talked Ivan.

''Marija and I have been together for a while and I had to come here today to get this off my chest, it has been going on for a long time, and also Marija is pregnant.'' said Ivan hastily.

''What... pregnant, no wonder she looked so different!'' shouted the Partisan Chief

''We met up at the Falcon Castle during her daily walks and fell in love.'' Said Ivan

''What do you know about love?'' shouted the Partisan Chief.

A moment of silence in the room felt like an empty room, not knowing what would be the next conversation, Ivan walked off in a hurry.

Marija still in the room stayed quiet and held onto her mother, and cried silently.

The Partisan Chief ran after Ivan and with an angry voice he yelled out, ''I want you to stay away from my daughter and don't come by my house ever again.''

Ivan knew the Partisan Chief will kill him for sure if he came by his house again; he had no choice but to stay away.

There was hatred between them and nothing could change that feeling, a kind of hatred that won't disappear, not even being in love with Marija could change anything.

No chances of talking to Marija, and their relationship were out in the open and now it remains to be seen what is going to be the next step from her father.

"I told you I'm not leaving Ivan" shouted Marija to her dad.

''If you choose to live with Ivan then you are on your own, I will wash my hands off you and your outcast,'' shouted Marija's dad. The rage in her dad's voice made her think of a fast decision to make peace in her family. Still nothing was said, she tried to keep her distance from her family and wanted to go on seeing Ivan as usual but she couldn't do it.

Her baby was due soon and getting around wasn't easy, staying in her room was the simplest idea. She had nowhere to go; life for the poor girl was getting worse.

A traditional life which closed the doors to this village girl from the outside world it did make a huge difference to her life compared to any other modern woman or girl.

Having a cell phone wasn't all in her life, she needed more than that, Marija felt trapped in her own world. Not being able to get further was her biggest problem.

'' She’s starting to think of Ivan as a future husband, a possible father, but would Ivan be able to cope with her dad?''

She knew how harsh that sounded, but she also knew Ivan was the only man for her..

Marija was losing hope. She knew the way she felt about him and he needed to prove that to her before it was too late.

Ivan chose her and she hadn't felt any better than she was with him, why is everything slipping away from her now?

Marija went up to the castle this time she asked a friend to drive her up there to meet Ivan secretly.

They met and it all felt good again for her. Ivan’s best spot was up on the castle, where the view was exquisite standing on the Falcon Castle made him feel free as a bird, the Falcon.

''I know that you don't want to hear this right now, but if I don't do this I am going to regret this for the rest of my life." Ivan began to bend down onto his right knee and pulled a small purple velvet box from his pocket. Marija Vanic. Will you do me the honor of marrying me?"

A feeling of sadness settled over Marija as she was asked the question.

Her eyes traveled over his face, taking in how he looked, so much like a boy.

Longish lashes touched his cheeks and a half smile on his face.

As Marija watched she wished she could hold his hand, their closeness made it easy but it was far from easy. A wall had been created between them; a tough time for both and this made it difficult to break through.

Heat rushed over Marija's face as she thought about how much she loves him. If he had been like-able to her family, it would have been easy to move on. There was now a doubt in her mind. Things would have been different. She couldn't break free from all these events.

It is now part of her, expecting her baby any day now, and she is up on the Falcon Castle trying to break up with Ivan and he surprises her with the proposal.

A deep sigh and she traced his hand the way she wanted to hold him and feel all new again, not this time. Touching his warm skin used to make her feel free again however this time round she didn't want to go through that emotion again.

Marija shook her head sharply, retreating from thoughts of touching and feeling. They had no place in her space behind the wall. Ivan was now to her as father of her child and nothing more. After careful thought she tucked her hands away and walked away from the question without answering.

There was nothing she could make her life that would be different now, living with her parents would make things easy for her until the baby is born.

She leaned back in the comfortable seat and closed her eyes. Maybe she'd be able to get some sleep.

''Love can't be controlled,'' she thought.

A new intimacy her first time and it feels like her life is falling apart.

''What did the Castle affair do to her?'' Marija asked herself.

The day Ivan Junior was born was the happiest day for Marija and family, as time went by Partisan Chief accepted his daughter, and they were living a good life. Things improved happily at home for Marija and her family.

Ivan was nowhere to be seen for a while until one shocking day when the village hears the sound of the church bells. Ding...Dong....Ding....Dong, the sound with breaks in between lets the people of the village know of a death of someone.

It was most awful to hear Ivan had thrown himself off the Falcon Castle. He couldn't be saved by the local gardener who found his body lying on the ground, i n a fetus position, he had a broken neck and some injuries on other parts of his body.

A Castle love affair that ended tragically, Marija was heartbroken, the only man she ever loved, the father of her child, and he didn't get to see his little boy, Junior Ivan. The guilt remained with her, for not accepting his proposal and walking away without saying a word. Marija was devastated.

Years went by and Marija till today hasn't married and lives with her family, the traditional way, her son is working on one of the most popular Cruise ships.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question :-) It must be great and mysterious to live near such a castle. I love that aspect of Europe where you can see and visit so many castles. I remember that there was a castle in the village where I grew up when I came back in Belgium; the school bus went by the castle each morning. There are still people living in that castle today :-)

      Enjoy your Sunday!

Ah, the power of love....the tragedy of love....the pain of love and yes, the joy of love. It is too beautiful to live without, but we must pay the price for it.
