An Enchanting Little Show

Updated on March 3, 2011

I love to watch the squirrels at play
as they frolic to and fro
racing up and down the trunks
of trees in lively show.
They chase and dance with heart-felt joy
in a festive game of tag,
race and twirl about the trees
in most delightful shag.
They run and jump in hot pursuit,
from branch to branch they leap,
always seeming satisfied
with the company they keep.
I love to watch their bushy tails
twitch and flick in fun
as they, in greatest merriment,
prance and leap and run.
I love to watch the squirrels at play
as they frolic to and fro.
Their entertaining antics,
are a most enchanting show.

Max, What a sweet memory that must be! Not everyone loves the squirrels like we do though! I bought my oldest son a fancy glass and brass bird feeder for his apartment and the squirrels nearly drove him nuts! Thank you for your read and awesome comment!

This is so cute and heart-warming! I was smiling all the way, such a wonderful tribute to little critters =) When I was little my grandpa used to go with me to the park where squirrels were artificially bred for the sake of attracting and entertaining the crowd. That was so much fun to feed them and watch them play around, they were fond of people because we always had treats for them (mind you, they were fed really well by the park keepers). I remember I was about seven years old and one time I found myself basically covered with squirrels - one on my head and two on the shoulders and the other one was sitting on my wrist. I was scared to breath LOL

Gus, you are just plain crazy, too, and I love that about you!The squirrel population here at my son's annoys him to no end...perhaps that is why i so enjoy them? lol...they are good clean entertainment, at any rate and inspiration too! Thanks so much for your fun comment!

No_Clue - Squirrels are plain crazy. Your poem catches that so very nicely. Thanks.

I made a "squirrel rig" one time using PVC pipes. It stood tall enough and had a swinging, swiveling, beam on top to which I could tie a dried yellow whole corn. the squirrel would climb up to the beam and crawl out to the ear of corn. Just before it got to the ear the beam would swing like crazy and dip that little guy clean off. then it would try again and again, never getting to the ear of corn, except for one time. This squirrel was the Einstein of the species. He climbed onto the branch of an overhanging tree and pounced on the ear of corn. He got it good, too. As you said - great fun to watch.

Just like your words were fun to read.

      Gus :-)))

My son was cursing the poor little things cause they ate all his bird seed and didn't clean up after themselves...I laughed sweetly and said,"What goes around comes around, sweetie, and squirrels gotta eat too, ya know!" He was not amused! And it's his squirrels that inspired this poem! Thanks for reading and leaving a comment!

I really enjoy watching them too but I just laugh at how hard folks try to stop them from eating the bird food. I just look at it like I'm feeding the squirrels too. Nice work! Peace!! Tom

I had to chuckle when i read your comment...the squirrels attack my son's bird feeder (his Christmas gift from me) so savagely that he had to bring it in....and I am currently visiting him and get to watch them play! Thanks!
