An Influential Life- Who she was to Me

Updated on July 12, 2010

Live your life like it matters to someone else

I hope I can shine the way you have always shown

I remember many summers past,

The most beautiful memories,

And the simpler days,

When I prayed that the summer would last.

I was just a little girl-

With a million and one questions about what makes up this world.

You always found the time for you and me to sit,

So I could ask all my curious questions, “What’s that-What’s this?”

Most days I would find trouble-other days trouble found me.

But you never really got angry, and still found a way to make me see.

I can still feel the way that it felt when you would hold my hand.

And explained away my confusions, until I was able to understand.

Even when I was lost-you never gave up on me.

Even when you were told I was trouble-you were always able to see me.

Now that I am grown and I am who you knew I would be.

I still remember the talks when you said-

I was the only one who didn’t believe in me.

You have a beautiful heart,

And a beautiful soul.

And if I could shine like any one,

I hope I can shine the way you have always shown.

I wish I would have taken,

More time out of my grown up days,

To sit and chat about nothing,

Just to hear what else you had to say.

I am really not too sure-

How I am going to say goodbye?

Because even though you’re ready,

I wish we had more time.

You have always been my guiding star,

I am who I am , because you have always been who you are.

Grandmothers are more than they ever thought they would be.

Just look at how much you have given to make me a more complete me.

You gave me more than your red hair-

And your frisky attitude.

You’ve given me part of my heart and that part will always shine for you.

You taught me that beauty that is only skin deep-

Isn’t beautiful at all.

That if you truly want to be beautiful,

Help someone stand back up-when they tumble and fall.

You led and taught by example-and what an example you gave.

That when you live your life-it’s not about power or the money you can save.

It’s about loving the life you live,

Being comfortable with who you are.

Working through the problems,

And finding peace in every war.

It’s about never giving up, on the ones who matter the most.

And when it comes to loving someone-there should never be an almost.

It’s about showing your kids how to lose and how to win,

And teaching them how to tell when someone is honest and a true friend.

Above all else, what you have given to me-

Is an example of the kind of life- that I hope I can lead.

A beautiful woman-

With a beautiful soul.

My beautiful grandmother,

That with beauty and admiration, I will always hold.

Just in case you have a single doubt-of what you mean to me.

You are everything I hope to become, and everything I will ever be.

When you go- are you leaving someone with something that makes a difference?

Some people in our lives-help mold our personalities and better the world with who they are; my grandmother is one of those people.

People do not live forever-and because most of us do not know when our expiration date will be, we must cherish the ones that we love today and tomorrow-so when they leave or when we leave, what is left behind are memories and moments from an abundance of yesterdays that will last forever in the hearts of the ones that shared them.

My grandmother is nearing the end of her life-but what she is leaving behind will still be here for generations to come. What she taught my mother, taught me and my siblings was how to appreciate everyone and everything that life brings towards you. She taught me to always give proper investigation to a book before judging its content. She taught others; you must open and read a few pages of a book, rather than make a quick decision based purely on the decoration of the cover. Although some stories may not be what you expected and others may not be your taste, you must take the chance of being disappointed because some of the most beautiful stories and experiences may not be tied up with glitz and glamour or ribbons and bows and without a chance, you will never experience their beauty.

In loving memory of Sylvia (MaMa)- I would not be who I am without everything you have taught me, and shown me. You were so much more than my grandmother-you were my guiding star, just like the song you use to sing to me when I was a child and would stay with you over the summer and was home sick.

Born- well she never would tell me, she said it didnt matter cause she felt like a spring chicken everyday- --Died on July 2nd 2010 at 8:30am

DawnM- thanks for taking the time to read this hub. I am so sorry for your loss. My father has cancer as well, and I pray that his life is not cut short by it. I think that many people spend much of their time wasted on focusing on the insignificant things in life- we need to focus more on the things that matter and the ones that we love. Thanks again for stopping by :)

samboiam, I lost my grandfather about 10 years ago- and although I was very close-these days, the death or aging of my remaining grandparents is some what different and in a way more painful. I believe it to be age and the fact that over the past 10 year I have been much closer with each of the remaining three-life without, will be different and I am not looking forward to the inevitable

Internetwriter, thank you for the encouragement. She did a wonderful job in regards to her influence on me. She always seemed very put together and I thought she must have been a saint there for awhile. I wondered why she never became angry enough to raise her voice

Thank you Veronica, I am glad that you liked this one :) You are right everything that we do in this life has the potential to affect the ones around us. We must keep that in mind when we decide how to live our lives and what kind of attitudes we carry. Thank you for leaving another thoughtful comment on my writing :)

H.C. you are truly blessed. Both my grandmothers passed away when I was in my early teens. I still miss them tremendously.

Thanks for such a heartwarming hub.

      Hi H.C.,

That is a beautiful tribute to your grandmother. I can see that she did a fantastic job of influencing you and helping to make you and everyone that touched her life the best that they can be. Thank God for wonderful grandmothers. May God give you and your family strength at this time.

What a beautiful tribute to your grandmother H.C. I only hope that I influence my children and my future grandchildren the way your lovely grandmother influenced you. I never really got to know my physical grandmother, but I have plenty of "spiritual" ones that have been a mainstay in my life.

This is a great reminder that what we do and what we don't do does truly influence others around us. Although your grandmother is reaching the end of her life, I think it is so brave of you to focus on all the good things she passed on to you. Saying goodbye is never easy and we all have to find ways to deal with it and grieve in our own way. You know we are all here from you... so don't hesitate to lean on our shoulders.

Thank you for your comment-It has put a smile upon my face. It certainly is what we leave behind when we die that speaks wonders of who we were when we were alive. She is hands down one of the sweetest most loving women I have ever known-and it shows when you meet anyone whom she has loved :)

Thank you for your encouraging comment. I am happy that you like what you have read. As much as the trip hurt, and having to kiss her and tell her goodbye one last time, crushed my heart- I am glad that I took the time to take that trip- You are correct-we must utalize the moments we have now, once they are gone-they are gone forever.

Thank you so much Ken- I am glad you were able to read and comment on this one. I am especially glad that you too had a wonderful grandmother who had the same effect on you that that mine has had on me.

I have been finding myself unfocused again today-so I apoligize for the lack of focus within any of my responses to comments left of this hub :)

This is wonderful . I was very close to my Grandmother . everything you said is so true . Such a great generation of truth and love . Strength and compassion .

But you are her . Mostly the wisdom she has passed down .

Thank you for writing this . You are the victory in her life . And as for your Grandmother . Job well done !

Holly a wonderful heart felt tribute to a very loved lady in your closely knitted families lives. I commend you on sharing this with us all here. The precious time we have with our loved ones is always to short, so we must make the best of giving them our time, time lost not spent with family, is LOST time, never to be replaced. Thank you for the beautiful share.

Thank you Mike for your kind comment. It helps out on days like today. Some times I think that the over sensitive nature which I possess is a downfall of mine, but then again-it makes me who I am. My heart hurts today, especially after being able to visit her, for what I know will be the last time, this past weekend. Can’t get my head on strait to get things done :) Goodbyes are so tough to get through, particularly the final ones.

HC, this is such a wonderful tribute to your grandmother. My father is 91, and my time with him is also closer to the end than the beginning. I so much admire your ability to speak from your heart, and your love of family is touching and admirable. Another trait you clearly share with your grandmother is the ability to touch the hearts of those around you. Thanks for sharing this beautiful tribute.

      Cari Jean,

Thank you for reading and commenting, I truly appreciate your feedback and support. I think that my ability to share from within is one amongst the many personality traits my grandmother passed down to me. I am struggling with goodbye and cant image the world without her, and for the past few weeks find myself smiling as I think of the past-as well as crying for the inevitable future- with that all said, I decided that perhaps sharing the happiness and pain I am feeling would be somewhat therapeutic...
