An Ode to Cheese: With a Poem Challenge

Updated on April 30, 2020

Chris has written poetry for 28 years though he focuses on short fiction. But watch out for the occasional twisted nursery rhyme.

This is not not so much my latest attempt at poetry as it is a challenge. I would like my friends to take a few minutes to produce a poem about food. Many of us are still shut up in our homes. Food has become a major issue. What will we eat? We search for new recipes.

We venture to the store with mask on face.

Hopefully all will respect my six foot space.

Oops, I'm rhyming again.

Time to quit.

Write a poem about food

Or I'll throw a fit. (See photo above).

Email me your poem when you post. Also leave a link here in the comments. Send samples of unspoilable food via your favorite delivery service.

An Ode to Cheeses

There are few things in life

That have earned the name "ode".

Lovers aye

Have grabbed royalty's hold.

We love nature

And family too.

But food has attained

A status to review.

Above all grub

On the foodstuff list

Are cheeses galore

Not one can be missed.

Feta

Cheddar

Camembert

And brie

Gouda

Roquefort

Gorgonzola

Goat cheese.

I could go on

To write their reviews

Havarti is one

On the list of a few.

My friends, the Brits,

Will have something to say

My list is deficient

My prose just okay.

But here is a challenge

To all my Hub friends.

Write a poem about food

With your fave at the end.

Mine would be Cheese! I love the stuff, but some I wouldn't try, but we'll keep that list 'on the sly'

      Oh Chris,

After reading John Hansen's poem on Steak, I just had to cook a homemade meal since there was no chance for a cookout. Today it is chilly once again.

In any case...here is my poem.

I hope you enjoy it. Sorry, no delivery service here.

I will enjoy reading all of the poems about food. I have never written poetry so I won't start now. I did enjoy your poem about cheese, Chris.

I look forward to reading the results. I've just seen cheese waiting to go into a quiche in the kitchen. This is a great idea for a challenge in lockdown. Food has taken on a greater significance recently.

Louise, I agree, cheese is the way to go. We need a special category for cheese poetry.

I think a poem about food is a good idea, especially about cheese. You can't go wrong with cheese!

John, your cheese poem most definitely inspired this hub. I look forward to reading your response to this challenge. Put some pressure on Bill to write a poem. He needs to expand his writing horizons just a bit.

Chris, I had to have a look at the food hub that my cheese poem inspired. Good job by the way. Food is one of my favourite things, so I guess I just have to take up the challenge. Can’t have you throwing a tantrum can we?

Bill, I've never even heard of Halloumi. I'll watch for it, but I'll just bet I won't find at the Wallmart grocery department. I really do want a poem out of you, but I won't put on any pressure.

You don't want any poem I might write, buddy, but I loved yours. Glad to see you mentioned Havarti, the King of My Cheese World. :) And if you've never had Halloumi, give it a try. Outstanding!
