Tanka: My Morning Surprise

Updated on September 14, 2016

Crimson leaves scattered

Dampened, pressed into the grass.

Such artful promise

Abandoned by distraction.

My child's origami.

What a lovely expressive simplicity! I felt I had observed the origami-like random arrangement of the leaves with you.

Good morning, arb :) I always enjoy seeing you here and appreciate your comments. After noticing that my poem was lacking a verb, I went back and made some adjustments. Sometimes I get a rush of inspiration with little time for writing. Now I am going to treat myself to the backlog of others' hubs that I have been wanting to catch up on. I hope you have a delightful day! Thanks for stopping by.

Good morning, Tom! It's always a pleasure to see you, especially since it's a sign that you have power restored. I've been very concerned for those of you in the Northeast and hope that you weren't seriously affected. Thank you for both your loyal following and thoughtful comments. I sincerely appreciate them! I wish you all the best.

      Hello d.william,

I'm glad you enjoyed my poem which creates a picture in few words. Some fans of lyrical or rhyming poetry find the Japanese styles to be simplistic and have little appreciation for the discipline involved. Some haiku translations are done in a rhyming couplet style. Thanks for stopping by to read and comment. I really appreciate it!

Just dropping by dear Catherine - to wish you well - and to thank you for your poetic love of nature - I receive a lot of morning surprises up here across from the lake too - especially watching the sunrises across the water during all 4 seasons - but it is a very nasty winter day today with high winds and blowing snow - a good day to be inside and do some cleaning and listen to some nice music - I hope sincerely all is well with you these days and tonight I will watch Oliver Stone's The Doors , again, I saw it once at the theatre when it came out and I bought it cheap on dvd yesterday - sending you warm wishes as always, my friend , and an interesting documentary I saw on Jimi Hendrox.

Apparently he was murdered not death by suicide or misadventure - someone poured too much wine down his throat and he drowned.

Check it out on google under : Was Jimi Hendrix murdered?

Hello, Colin. I hope you are keeping snug with your precious cats, good music, and pot of tea. I can only imagine the wind chill factor-brrrr! I was mesmerized when I saw The Doors in the theater. Val Kilmer was fantastic as Morrison! Since Jim settled in LA when at UCLA, he played the local clubs. For me, both the Doors and the Byrds epitomized the late 60s LA music sound, and I was glad that I got to see them! I will check out the Hendrix link. Thank you for that!

Sending you warm wishes too. . .

      Catherine :)

Very inspirational to the poets intrigued by both haiku and tanka forms! Well captured outdoor scenes featuring delicate moments that reflect the changing of the seasons. It has captured the fleeting moments in time reminding the beauty of everyday life and also the brevity of life.
