Ancestors of Poetry

Updated on February 21, 2017

I call upon the ancestors
of a past I wish I had.
I call to Emily Dickinson
who embraces me with
reality and death
in a realm of dashes
and exclamation points.
William Shakespeare,
unable to ever tell me the truth
with his hopeless romantic ideals.
Walt Whitman,
please sit down.
I never seem to get
along with you.
I call to Phillis Wheatley
because she calls for
justice and equality.
And Robert Frost
because he knows about
this journey called life.
I call to these voices
that even death cannot silence.
And now, I call
to the voices of the future.
The voices that haven't
even heard the cry
of The Raven yet.
