Annihilation: A Wonderful Throwback To The Classic Days of Scifi
Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeere
Annihilation
I saw this movie advertised a while ago. It was called Annihilation, and it looked like it should be pretty good. But a little bit later, I soon found the book it was based on, on a daily Kindle deal and I thought I would give it a try. So here is my review of Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeere.
So what is the book about? It focuses on this strange phenomena that has appeared on the US coast. In the phenomena is an area where strange wildlife, plant life, and an alien overall eco-system is taking everything over. Why is this happening? No one is sure. But this is gradually spreading over the main land and the government is worried. They dubbed it Area X and have been sending teams in to find out what is going on. This story follows a biologist and her team as they go on an expedition to study the goings on in Area X and figure things out.
The good? This is very old school classic science fiction. This feels closer to the style of HG Wells more than any modern fiction. It’s a refreshing throwback to the classics. It also is very imaginative. It also is a good character study of our lead as well. She seems so shallow and reclusive at first, but the reader learns her personal story and it ties well into her fate in this eco system. And it just ties together so wonderfully.
The bad? The book I very short and I think many people may be disappointed by that.
Overall, this is by no means the greatest science fiction but it’s a pretty good read. It’s a wonderful throwback to old fashion scifi and if you enjoyed HG Wells and Jules Vern, you will enjoy this.
