Purple

Purple

by Alice Olsen

Purple is the smell of violets

on Aunt Jane's dress.

Purple is a soft smooth plum,

slippery with juice,

sweet and moist as grapes on a thirsty day.

Purple is the sound of tears on amethyst velvet

as day becomes night.

Purple is the majesty of royal robes

and the mystery of the infinite.

Purple is the heart

offered open unto God.
