Apostrophe to Time
Friend and enemy of mine, you who make
Life seem like heaven or hell and drive on
Relentlessly. Pushing, each morning, to wake
Us from pleasant dreams, making garish dawn
In garish splendor shine, forever gone.
Even now, I struggle against futility,
Watching another day of life withdrawn,
From some fatal account I cannot see;
Accepting death’s approach with nobility.
Time’s shadow cast a hundred years from now
Will tumble my bones in the abyss
Of dark decay, of dust, that won’t allow
Remembrance of a life filled with bliss,
And sorrow-- the promise of a lover’s kiss,
The miracle of birth, the sting of regret;
Intense feelings as we reminisce
In the silver twilight years. Though beset
By death, we’re soothed by times we’ll ne’er forget.
