"Attack of the Closet Monsters" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on February 4, 2014

"Attack of the Closet Monsters"

Flick off the light and jump quickly into bed

Closet Monsters can't get to you if the blankets are pulled over your head

A child raised on fear, tucked tight, praying

Hot breathed whispers in the dark, unanswered, they go without saying

"Boo" to the bullies

The ones who laugh at fright

The ones you envision going bump in the night

Casting shadows of doubt against our bedroom walls

Feeding on fresh fear, thirsty for fresh tears

The victim; shed a few in his early years

But..... Tonight is now and right here

Promising myself a tomorrow without fear

I swing open the door and challenge

Fists folded ready to strike

Ready to reclaim and take back the night

The monsters in the closet now getting a taste

There's a new face to fear when fear is faced

A monster of a man peering into their land

Closet Monsters now scared of things they don't understand

For they too fear the unknown and the unseen

A man ready to get down and dirty with his conscience washed clean

Pure grit, showing teeth

Smiling as he attacks

Laughing at the shoe switching from the left to the right

He flicks back on the switch, he's seen the light

The Closet Monsters retreat to their portal and fly to another room

There's a child on the other side of town awaiting their em pending doom

Closet Monsters don't exist, they are all inside your head

Now the Boogeyman... he's real, and he's under your bed

Hmmm i know about these faces and imaginary monsters, sometimes if my towel is hanged and i turn off the light i will see it appearing as something scary. My room magnifies things when the light is off.

Thanks Jodah, 'twas commentary on not being bullied or succumbing to the hysteria of fear that is cast on our society from birth. Now they gotta fear me, ha.

Damn, it was a relief to find out those closet monsters were just a figment of my imagination....but that Boogeyman has me pulling the blanket over my Good poem Eric.

Boy ! Does this bring back memories. I went through that closet monster thing as a kid then again with both my kids suffering from it. I often sat at the foot of one of my kid's bed half the night to keep away the monsters. Enjoyed your poem.
