Author of 'Last Hero' brings a new story in the same universe lost in darkness.

A Teaser from a Last Hero Story, 'Awakening'

The following is an excerpt from my book, Awakening: a Last Hero Story. Chapter 6: Child of Light

Slae responded, though, by her tone he guessed that she was already onto his trail of thinking, “I had reasoned in my own thoughts that if someone as powerful as you were not fighting the Shadow, then it must be that you could not leave your world.”

“It is true, I must always persist in some way, within my dimension. Yet, I and my dimension are one, separating me from it would require the very essence of reij’duun.” The Angel of Light paused and saw Slae did not comprehend the word, but how could he? The word is from an other-worldly language, and she went on to explain, “In somewhat similar manner, the power of total destruction. However, I can phase myself into your universe so long as a pocket of my dimension is attached. In fact, the very reason we can communicate verbally is because I have a very faint pocket of my dimension about us.”

Slae just stared, the deeper part of his question was not answered and she sighed, “I would rather not answer that question.” Quweaign said, but the determination was clear on Slae’s face, “I do not have power enough to destroy the Shadow.” Slae suddenly looked pale as she went on, “Yes… now you see. You will need to be far stronger than I am. Though the day may come when I must make a deal with my pursuers.”

Slae gave her a puzzled look and she continued, "That is another reason I cannot remain long. There are those that seek me that I would be powerless to deny. They seek me for things which I have committed."

Slae pushed, "What are these things?"

"I am the Angel of Light, guide of good, protector of the light and provider of the balance over said powers." She paused, thinking of her next words, “I, with one who guided the balance over the black, or evil as you know it, abandoned our places. We had our reasons, but he… Well, he no longer matters as times has washed him away."

The Angel’s glow dimmed as she went on, "We gave our responsibilities over to cold, careless objects of power that would stabilize the Universe infinitely without bias. Eventually, beyond any foresight, they required hosts to channel their immense power. These hosts were known as the Ten Lords.

“Soon the Lords too abandoned their posts or turned to wicked intent. You see, our hearts tend toward darkness; yet even one of light, can turn the tide of this war." She looked at Slae, and said, "This is you."

Slae turned away from the Angel, but she only went on saying, "For this reason we are here: The Shadow, creepeth from the Nether Regions of space with one purpose – to devour everything. None will survive. Yet, for the first time in thousands of years, it stopped upon a blue speck in space. Do you know why? I doubt you could, since I cannot even fathom why."

"Can you tell me more of the Shadow’s origin?" Slae asked.

Quweaign nodded, "Before my time, in this realm; a dark force emerged from several mysterious, arcane and yet horrific consciousnesses. In less than a days’ time it grew and destroyed the entire solar system, including its own fathers.

“Its horror spread quickly, giving no warning. The Shadow cared not for the living, only to grow and sustain its massive need for life. All who opposed it were cut down to ruin. Those who were lucky died before it could devour them.

"Soon a quarter of the Universe was devoured or under its control and it was sealed within that region of space. This was the doing of the High Council, those who once oversaw all of creation, yet they used the last of their power and have become mere watchers. With this action came the Nether Region, a place in which none can escape or enter… yet the Shadow found a way."

"How do I destroy it?" Slae asked.

The Angel of Light smiled at him, and said, "This would be the other reason: The power of light shall be gifted to you. I should clarify, it will be used to awaken the Child of Light within you. It is of the rarest of gifts and though it can be utilized, none will ever be able to receive it, save for the one it was meant for."
