Baa Baa Black Sheep

Updated on March 3, 2011

i've always been the black sheep
in my ancestral flock...
a fact I've but regretted
since invention of the clock.
that is, until i realized
within my familial herd..
the black sheep of this unit
was not such an ugly bird...

it seems I was quite different
and never did quite fit...
it was this uniqueness
that I didn't liked one bit...
however, that has shifted
as, with age, i have matured...
the truth, as I now see it,
my singularity secured.

I've always been more sensitive.
to tears i'm always prone...
been drawn to the abstractions
in that famous Twilight Zone..
I've eyes for hidden beauty
where beauty's seldom found...
been often called the dreamer
whose feet don't touch the ground...
I hear a tune within my head
to which I'm known to dance,
always choose to follow
my heart, not circumstance.

The wisdom that I've garnered,
as the black sheep of the flock,
came upon the winds of change
and came as quite a shock!
there is no shame in color
and my value does abound...
its within my own uniqueness
that my self respect is found.

With surprise i did discover
that in truth, I'd rather be...
instead of white and wooly,
like the rest, totally me!
it is with pride, today i say
and choose to status keep
a special place within the flock...
my family's lone black sheep.

I absolutely love this. Totally can relate to being the black sheep with the creative artistic gene and unique perspective that sees beauty in things others would just glance over. Great write. truly enjoyed it.

Fluffy, Thank you! Your comment is very touching! Being a black sheep is a bittersweet thing...Sometimes I take pride in it and sometimes I want to hide in it! It is good to know I am not alone, though!

Consider my previous comment, the joke that it is. I am sick to death of all of this racist jargon. I am white so, should the song 'White Christmas' be banned in case I am offended. Black is black and white is white and those who want to upset the apple cart should get a life.

Your poem was great and very profound.

Fossillady, Thanks for stopping by! I have a affinity for sheep, most especially black particular reason, but so it's always been. Out of five in my family, three of us claim the black sheep status, which is a bit

Thanks so much, AliciaC! Yes, I believe you are right!

I suppose we've all felt that way one time or another in our lives, but when its in your own family, ouch! I even have a work of art with the black sheep so it definitely rings a bell. It all makes sense now and you brought that out in your lovely poem!

Great poem, I have always considered myself a black sheep. Never really completely fit in anywhere, but I always able to hang around the rim. It is better to be unique than the same as everyone. They are the truly lost ones.

Hi Christina! Thanks for the read! For so much of my life I tried to fit in, until I realized that I just didn't like who I was trying to fit in with! That I would rather be me than them...maybe that sounds snobby but believe me, its not. Its good to know I am not the only black sheep around! Thanks, Girl!

There are people out there who would die to be unique but don't know how to achieve to be themselves. So you should actual be proud and wear that uniqueness as a belt of a champion. Great post and great flow. Thanks for sharing!

PA, I am happy to see you, my friend! I have come to realize that it is perhaps a blessing I haven't appreciated much until of late, this uniqueness...and the truth of the matter is what I think of my uniqueness that determines my level of happiness or fulfillment...that is an epiphany for this little tnderhrt! I may be a bit slow, but I always get there eventually! I have missed you!

Interesting to see how this poem relates to the experience I have with some relatives. Outwardly friendly, but only tolerant of what they see, and sometimes outspoken about my difference to the rest of the family. I find that I have walked to the beat of my own drum! And I do not change just for them, because I am happy. :)

Yes being Unique is never easy, there is always someone trying to squeeze you into a mold of sameness or tear you down for being different. Making you feel out of place. When in fact it is because you are unique and different you make this world a better place.

Being unique has a certain quality that an assembly line of same can never reach, you are different, you are special, i'm glad you have grown to like who you are. Nice work tnderhrt23

WillStarr, I suppose you have a point...but I am fond of goats, as well!

acaetnna, I would choose to be me over the rest of the sheep in my fold, every time, today...that is huge growth for me! Thanks!
