Battlefield Earth not the movie but the beginning

Updated on April 12, 2012

Battlefield Earth Unfair History.

This may be one of the most under rated books of all time.

I know the movie totally sucked most everyone I know agrees with that.

The book however is a different story (pun intended) all together.

I read the book in 1984 at he age of 20 I have read it 13 times since. In 2000 when the movie came out I was so exited to see it. Then very pissed when I did . Take a look at a 2011 corvette then a 1971 pinto. See how much the look alike ? They both have the four wheels. That is how much the book and the movie have in common

The movie

In the movie The main character Jonnie Goodboy Tyler is a captive of the main bad guy a Psychlo named Terl along with many other humans who get together and revolt. The main bad guy Terl is played by John Travolta . Terl is about seven foot tall and looks more like a Star Trek Clingon then a Psychlo. It has no decent plot. Because it starts in the middle of the story it makes very little sense.

It just destroys the integrity of the book.

The book

This book is roughly 1100 pages. A long read. It starts with the death of Jonnie's father.

After his father's funeral he decides to leave the village in the Colorado Mountains. To go to the plains and see if the monster stories he has heard all his life is true.

The Psychlos are a nasty bunch of Viral based life forms about ten feet tall not unlike the famous big foot or Sasquatch in appearance. But much worse in every way. They have been altered at birth for many years in a way that makes things like being cruel taste well . I do not want to give more detail in case you read it.

A psychlo Terl who is in charge of security for the planet decides to catch one human he has heard they used to live on the planet in great numbers. He wants to try teaching it to mine gold from a location in the mountains where he cannot gain access.

He catches Jonnie who as a prisoner learns their language. Jonnie convinces Terl to let him recuit other humans to help. But Jonnies real plan is to use the psychlos own technology against them to take back the planet.

It does not stop there. It goes on to rebuilding the earth and integrating with other alien species.

Very good

I am going to cut this short because I do not want to ruin the book for you. But it is simply among the best books ever written. I believe it would have been much more acclaimed if the movie had not come out and destroyed its chances.

I love this book. Don't know how I feel about Scientology but this book is great. Thanks for the comments.

I have also read Battlefield Earth and totally agree the movie has very little to do with the story told in the book. The story in the book is a thousand times better.
