Close To You ........ A Korean Love Poem

Updated on May 2, 2012

I came across this Korean love poem yesterday in the asianload forum. It is so beautiful. I decided to keep it in my collection. I have done some editing from the original translation. Enjoy...

Close To You – A Korean Love Poem

Although I wanted to come closer,

I couldn’t possibly go closer
because the more I come closer,
I felt that the more you will drift away from me

If I come closer..
If I really do,
I feel that you will leave me forever
that’s why I couldn’t come closer

If you’d leave me,

I‘d be left with those pain and loneliness...
I didn’t think I would be able to handle it
So although I wanted to come closer,
I didn’t dare to come closer

I long to have one moment close to you

but you would leave me forever.
So I kept the distance between us,
as I wanted to be at a place where I will always be able to see you.

In my eyes...
The saying that you're the only one I see...
That, I believe, is a lie...
In my eyes, I see many people...
But, amidst this group of people,
I only search for you.

There's no such thing as the perfect guy.
And there's no such thing as the perfect girl.
But only a less than perfect guy
And a less than perfect girl can make
a perfect love.

Close to You in Korean Language

Poetry in Korea

Traditional Korean poems were often sung in Korean performances. Today, Korean poetry is performed and written in phonetic Korean language, hangul, where the Korean alphabets are used. However, before the 20th century, much of Korean poetry was written in Hanja or Chinese characters. Hangul has not been introduced then; hence Chinese characters were borrowed from Chinese and incorporated into the Korean language with Korean pronunciation.

Since 1970s, lyrical poetry dominated Korean literature. Poetry has become increasingly popular in 21st century in Korea, as can be seen from the number of works published.

How do you love?

You fall in to it!!

It is a continuous and ever-lasting feeling,
even if you don’t express it at all times.

~Master Jin Kwon

Relationships flourish,
when individuality, freedom and growth are respected.

Relationships are like sparring;
within the appropriate space,
action and reaction naturally flow.

Ingenira, you created such beautiful Hub. the poem and the pictures are perfect.

Korean poem? Hmmm... it reminded me of one Korean poem I like which being used by Korean Movie, "winter Sonata". I forget the title, but it is about first love which never go away even after the new want already come.

I read the poem both in English and Korean and it seemed to sound better in Korean. There's this certain rhythm and in Korean it also sounds more intimate.

I guess love is pretty much the same everywhere in the world. It sounds like there's some experiential wisdom here. Thanks for showing us love in Korea, Ingenira.
