Poem: Becoming (For My Father)

Updated on September 7, 2011

I began as a dream

Within the gleam of your china blue

The dream was quite elusive,

It called, and I longed for you

When I heard you speak

It was my mother’s tongue

From way back before long ago

Before I was ever young

As I listened to your voice,

It sang from melody to song

With words that rhymed in harmony,

And a heart that danced along

And down Love’s Lane in paradise

By evening I’d wait to greet

The sweet soft scent of lilac

You placed primrose by my feet

And somewhere in the quiet

In the stillness of the night

With beloved in your arms

You set the womb-wick light

While serenading stars encompassed the sky

I gulped my first breath

As a newborn, I began to cry
