"Beer Can Mattress Flashback" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on February 3, 2014

"Beer Can Mattress Flashback"

A door to the past is ajar in my mind

I can twist or shove it open and see

A war criminal, criminal of the war

Wanting another beer on his bed and nothing more

So he scream-eth from bed to yonder door

Where I now stand

Looking at the mirror, seeing the mirror, but something's missing

The man

Laying loose in the sun now

Palms up to the trees, pleading

On his knees for us, bleeding

Young minds die young

Out in the jungle festering in the sun

Questions come fast and harsh

Do I, do we, why do we die? Die do we?

Soul of the 60's

Trapped in the jungle

Laying in a room

On a beer can covered mattress

"Get me a beer!?"

Me, being the man I am now

Asking my young self

"Why didn't you adhere?"

He'd probably say

"Cause of fear"

I had enlisted

A night in my friends haunted house

We slept, fatigued in greens from the day's play

The man from the war, went to it

Threatening, murder, arson and pain

To all who had slept in the jungle and not paid

The price, the one he see fit

I knew the man was crazy

And If I ever get to see another hero

I'll recognize the broken product

Out of the package and handled

A toy

A man

A hero

A man on a beer can covered mattress

I dart home, I retreat

Forget the smell of victory

I like the taste of defeat

For I will fight another day

And ima do it my way

But you'll still get to me too

Nanny- nanny boo boo

I arrive at my childhood home

"There's a spoon in the sink"

Back in the trenches I go

To my trivial world

Thank you,

To all the men who served on a beer can covered mattress
