Updated on March 14, 2011

If there is one constant it is our lives change. We experience beginnings and endings. The following poem is an example of a relationships beginnings and endings. We all experience this. Share one of yours in the comment section. I would love to see them.

This poem is about events in the 70’s and 80’s. I have had many more beginnings and endings since then. Someone once said the secret of a happy life is to have more beginnings than endings. I am working on that!

Beginnings and Endings

-

Every beginning has an end

Rides to get Slim Jims

Used as an excuse to be alone

For a while

In the beginning

-

I remember a statement

I love you

Made with a screen door between us

A beginning

-

Long rides

On country roads

Learning to need each other

A beginning

-

A honeymoon in Florida

Finding a house

Moving half way across the country

A beginning

-

The birth of a son

Coming home on a warm January day

In a yellow van

A beginning

-

Canoe trips on clear Florida Rivers

Rescuing a squirrel

Eating lunch in a cypress tree

Somewhere near the end

-

Morning talks still in bed

About the kids mostly

We always had the morning

Near the end

-

Long nights in a cold bed

Together

Careful not to touch

An ending

-

Long walks on sunny sandy beaches

Alone - Wondering - Why

You wouldn’t walk with me

An ending

-

A court of law

A judge and two lawyers

Singing away a dream

An ending

-

A new life alone

Learning to cope in a different world

Hoping to learn well

A beginning

-

Meeting new people

Loving them

But not committing

Afraid of where it would lead

A beginning

-

A new apartment with a pool

And visits from the kids

And new neighbors

A beginning

-

Every end is a new beginning

It would take a long time to re-commit, we get upity so easily about everyday things, instead of concentrating on the good things. Good luck Sir.

Endings can bring new beginnings but we want to make sure they are better than what ended initially. I also agree with Will. Good poem!

Every end is a new beginning

What an optimistic cup-is-half-full attitude. Great!

Will, things change not always for the best. Use to be only one parent had to work - children had a parent to come home to. Fay, I agree with will too.

We used to stay together if at all possible. Today, it's far too easy to say goodbye. We end a lifetime commitment for the most trivial of reasons.
