Being Serious is No Fun

Updated on September 30, 2013

His life had led him all around

He never seemed to find

A place to settle down

He had grown up a poor boy

Always having to struggle everyday

He was an orphan

And often wondered who he really was

Day in and day out

He worked hard to make ends meet

Trying to be a sculptor

Hoping to get world renowned

Creativity was an escape for him ‘

A way to bring joy to a world

Who had pushed him aside

His friends all artists themselves

Always would shake their heads and say

He was much too serious for his own good

That serious was not good for creativity

And so it went day in and day out

He created and spent his nights

Entertained by his friends

At the corner pub

Then one day she walked into his life

An art gallery opened up

In the neighborhood

Run by a woman who his friends

Began calling their muse

The moment they saw her

She signed them up one by one

Glad to be able to display

Their magnificent works of art

When it was his turn

His heart skipped a beat

He looked into her eyes

And saw such passion there

It wasn’t long before she chose him

Above all the others

And it was then that he discovered

That the serious life was not for him

She taught him how to laugh

How to see the world through different eyes

They started off by being childish

To the great glee of all his friends

And wound up falling in love

He had never ridden on a carousel

Had never taken a roller coaster ride

He’d never danced and dined

He’d never sold a sculpture

Until the one she inspired

He taught her so much and even more

And when it came to passion

He realized that nights were not long enough

Life now brought only joy

And nights were full of romance

Everywhere they went hand in hand

And while he created she worked

For her it was more difficult

To be apart from him

For him it was easy

For he created with her in mind

The sculpture he created

Dedicated to their love

Paid for their wedding and honeymoon

Life was so very fine

A well told tale. You really are an expert at portraying a full story condensed into poetic form brilliantly.

Uplifting, Gypsy Rose Lee! I love happy endings. The video was a treat...I remember Concrete and Clay when it came out in 1965. I was a 19 year old, home on leave after finishing USAF medical school.
