If nobody believed in you.
One thing i have come to understand is that sometimes the problem is not us but the people around us,i was opportune to mix with different people from different spares of life while growing up and this is because of my belief that i was destined for greatness.
Born into a medium class family though there were others born with golden spoon but neither gold nor diamond spoon did i ever see yet i had big dreams and believed that i was better than those who have facts so when life took its toil on me and everyone failed to believe in my potentials, i had reasons never to allow their judgments direct or dictate my destiny.
I wanted to be successful and never for one day believed that i will pick Manna along the road,i knew that i had to work towards achieving all my dreams so when i chose to learn shoe making and everyone including my siblings laughed over it, it gave me more zeal to pursue my dream instead of succumbing to their belief that i will not excel in shoe making.
My own kind of shoe making is not the revolutionary one you see today because i toiled under the sun repairing worn out shoes, polishing other people's shoes and sometimes make new shoes though it was a kind of hectic work but the sun and rain that beat me daily did not stopped me from coming out as early as 7am and closing for the day late nights.
I was not so good at the beginning but as time passed and with steady work,i became perfecting in shoe making but something happened one day.
If no body believed in you
The task force ejected all street vendors and this affected me, there was no more space for me and no where to go but while walking round the street, i came across a man, he was a rich man in the neighborhood and owned a spacious empty land few meters away from the community center so i approached him and told him of my predicaments then begged him to allow me put up a shed in his empty land.
Honestly, he was a kind man and very generous so there was no doubt in me that he will turn me down,i believed it the moment i saw him that God has answered my prayers by allowing me to meet the man but to my worst imagination, all he did was simply laugh at me. He busted out laughing and boldly told me that he will not give me the space because i was not good at shoe making besides that i was a never do well.
This broke my heart as i left him with tears.Imagine yourself in my position,a man with family to feed but no one believe in you.
It became obvious as days passed that i have to look for another work because there was no space in the street any more so that was when it came into my mind to enlist into the Military. I did not have a second thought about it so i went straight to the enrollment center and asked for the application form but to my disbelief, i was rejected by the secretary, he told me that i was too old to enroll into the Military and asked me what i was doing all the years back.
Sir i said,"I have been repairing shoes all those years"
Everyone that heard about what happened laughed at me but i never saw that as a thing to grief for so walking up to the Brigadier that morning was not wrong and as he saw my determination and listened to everything that i said.
Putting me under intense exercise and the two hours run in the field was just a simple fun for me.
There was twenty of us but after six hours of harsh military training, rope climbing and jumping the fire work,ONLY ONE MAN WAS STANDING.ME!The me no one ever believed in.
Does age matter? NO
Does people's belief matter? NO
Does failure matter? NO
To me age is nothing but number and whatever you can do, no matter how old you are,you can do it so seeing the old man been rejected that morning to drive was simply wrong because each and everyone of us has the desire to drive and almost everyone that had a driving lesson ended up driving though so many did not become racers yet all had the basic driving skills.
That is why even though that rich man believed that i was a never do well and the worst shoe makers in the city yet i found reasons to believe that i was simply the best in town because no one had ever complained of my service besides even when i lost my stand, people still brought me works at home so it does not matter to me then and even now because i like myself and love who i am.
Failure to me is nothing but a further step to success because when you fail, you learn and strive to correct the area where you have flaws.Believe me, if failure is a set back then there will be no electric bulbs in our world today because it was the great idea of Humphry Davy that propelled Thomas Edison's great mind and amidst his continuous failures, he kept trying until it became obvious that the electric bulb will burn for over one thousand hours.
As a matter of fact, i used the three illustrations above simply to pass on to you right now that it does not matter what people think of you or how many times you failed in life, what matters is what you believe and the very moment you allow people's judgment to rule your belief then self pity will become your companion,if i had allowed all their mockeries and laughter to guide me,
This would not have happened...
And not only did i believed in myself,i was the oldest recruit when i was enlisted into the Army, i was 39 years but that did not stopped me from becoming what i really wanted to be,you see remember where this journey began and how long i have traveled amidst sun and rain, ups and downs and people's worst imagination.
Yet, i excelled against all critics and during our earlier years as recruits,i made so many great friends who shared the same value and have the same fighting spirit like me but the most important thing then was that,i was the only shoe repairer in the barracks and i sometimes have to repair more than thirty boots in a day, no one shined or polish shoes and booths better than me.
The Generals all knew me and it was not too late before i made it to the top, passing all my military exams with high grades and later obtained a degree in Psychology and a doctorate degree in Human Relations.I went on to become a Military Instructor in the rank of a Colonel.
