Blue Balloon...a poem

Updated on April 17, 2011

This poem is sadly inspired by my nephew Jordan Scott Ridgeway who very recently passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at the tender age of 3 months.

Bright blue like your eyes

Sparkling against the rain

It rises higher into the dark skies

Far from the touch of pain

Far from a mothers hand

And a fathers loving heart

Both struggling to understand

As the balloon slowly departs

So young to be set free

A Mother’s dreams shattered

Soaring over the old trees

The blue balloon never faltered

Rising high to the heavens

Carried on winds of love and belief

Far from the small white coffin

Surrounded by tears and grief

It soars on out of sight

Filled with a mothers last goodbyes

Untouched by wrong or right

Or the sound of heartbroken cries

So take this last gift with you

A blue balloon to make you smile

Symbol of love so true

To carry you that last mile

It is so hard to deal with death, be it the loss of a young babe or saying goodbye to dear loved one. I am sorry to hear of your recent pain and the loss of your nephew, we can only hope that they truly soar with angels now.

I wish you and your wife nothing but the best during this time, it is so hard to say goodbye

I am so sorry for your loss. I also lost my nephew when he was only a couple months old. This poem touched me in another way...we just said goodbye to my mother in law and we released balloons. I also wrote a poem to her memory called farewell. It is hard to say goodbye to the young. But we know that they are innocent...and that they are free.

Both of my sister in laws have had this same experience, it devastated the entire family. Both times attending the funeral was so heartbreaking. I am sending all of you a huge hug, it takes time to grieve and your family will need a lot of support. Try to be strong.

How sad it is to lose a child at any age. Our Lord had plans for this bright boy taken to play in the meadows and chase butterflies with the Angels on High.

I pray for peace to the boys parent's may they be blessed with another and may the Blue balloon soar once more in the current of wind swept love that God breaths into new life.

it was a beautiful and haunting moment to be sure, but out of all the things this mother has ever endured losing her babe has been the hardest of them all.

I love the fact that you all have chosen to remember your brother in such a vivid way, keeping his memory alive and very much a part of your every day in such a way is a beautiful tribute

ah that is a nice sentiment, the blue baloon at the funeral. that is touching. i know its not easy to lose a child, my mother is very strong and at peace with it now, but im glad i did not have to see her when it happened. im sure she was a wreck. we all have a tattoo in memory of him, my parents and I. though i never met him, i feel like ive known him my whole life, and have this unconditional love for him, though hes not in this world, i find him in my heart. as your nephew will be in yours and your family's.

your words are so kind, thank you I have struggled to find my own way to say goodbye to this precious soul that was shared with us so so briefly. it means a lot to have this poem so generously read and accepted here thank you

      always exploring,

thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and to leave such a sincere comment, it is very much appreciated...

      Randy Behavior,

One of the hardest poems I have ever written, so many strong emotions attached to this tragic event that it makes hard to know where to start. But one thing I did know was that my nephew was innocent knowing only the love that a baby can know and it was that he was leaving this world with. having been surrounded with it all his short life.

thank you for reading this, I am glad it wasn't as 'painful' as you were fearing, as I am hoping that his mother may read it one day and perhaps find some comfort.. hard to know

thank you, its been a very painful time for my family but with support the days will start to get better

The symbol of the blue balloon was taken directly from his funeral, the way his mothers eyes looked as she watched it float up, will stay with me for the rest of my life. my heart breaks for her everyday in some new way. Its only trusting in the intangible life beyond that we can hope to be reunited with our loved ones, thank you so much for your sympathy here I was sorry to hear of your family's loss...

I was afraid to read this one. I cannot fathom this pain, but I like the way you put the emphasis on the journey home. And this line: "Untouched by wrong or right" somehow made me feel better about it.

Theres never a real answer as to why God takes away someone who has just come into this world, other than, they are a pure soul, too good for this world, he shall never be tainted by the sins of it. the cruelty of it, and though he may be gone, he will always have his mother and father's love, and yours. this was a beautiful and heartwarming poem, i love the symbolism you used of the blue balloon, as if watching it float higher and higher you were watching his soul float to heaven. I lost a would be older brother, before I was even born, so I never met him. he was but 2 days old when he died, due to breathing problems. not a day goes by when i dont wish he was here, or that it was me instead of him. what i wouldn't give to know him. but i believe he is my guardian angel now, he looks over me. and i hope to meet him someday, in a life beyond this one.

Sometimes the answers we seek aren't the ones we were looking for to begin with. Painful beyond comprehension yes, but to bring hearts closer together even if just for that split second in time. So lovely the pain painted here. To join you in sorrow for now I did. Thank you for sharing your pain. A great teacher is she, just not always understood.
